We quickly discover who is giving gifts to whom, and we learn that Jim is in charge of finding something special for Pam. He carefully puts together a gift – a teapot filled with small, meaningful items like a high school yearbook picture, a packet of hot sauce, a pencil, and a heartfelt card – because, as he says, “Christmas is the time to tell people how you really feel.”

For over a season, viewers had sensed a growing connection between Pam and Jim, and this episode seemed like the one where they’d finally make a move. However, the Secret Santa gift exchange quickly went off the rails. After Jim received a strange, used flannel from Creed (who hadn’t actually bought him a gift), Pam opened her present: a teapot. When Michael received a handmade oven mitt from Phyllis, he changed the rules and turned Secret Santa into a gift-swapping game. Meredith stole the teapot from Pam, who then took an iPod from Ryan. Ultimately, Dwight ended up with the teapot and decided to use it as a sinus remedy.

Later in the episode, Pam manages to get the teapot from Dwight by trading with him, and she tells Jim she appreciates all the effort he put into finding it. Jim then shows her the extra gifts he got, but secretly keeps the card he intended to give her. What’s written on the card isn’t revealed to viewers, and the whole thing is essentially forgotten until eight seasons later, in the final season of The Office.

Plus, Jim and Pam are happily married with two children.

Jim asks the documentary film crew – the same crew featured in the show, with Chris Diamantopoulos portraying the boom mic operator Brian – for a favor. He and Pam are going through a difficult time because Jim recently moved to Philadelphia for work.

Jim, with assistance from the documentary crew, puts together a heartwarming montage of their most cherished memories from The Office. The montage includes the teapot and bonus gifts, finally giving Pam the chance to see Jim hand her the card. He tells her, “Everything you need to know is in that note.” This touching scene, eight years in the making, is a highlight of the episode “A.A.R.M” and is often considered one of the best of the entire series.

As a huge fan of The Office, I always wondered what Pam’s final note to Jim said! We never actually get to see it, which was so frustrating. But finally, on the Office Ladies podcast – which Angela Kinsey and I host – I revealed the secret. It turns out, it wasn’t a message from Pam at all! Greg Daniels, one of the writers and producers, suggested to John Krasinski that he write a personal message as Jim, telling me what working on the show together meant to him. It was just for me and John to know, and it was such a sweet moment!

The series was ending, and everyone was feeling very emotional. That moment was his way of saying goodbye.

Fischer described an emotional moment while filming, explaining that he received a note from John and immediately began to cry. The first attempt at the scene was unusable due to his reaction. While the exact wording of the note remains a secret, Fischer shared that Pam has vowed to never reveal it, emphasizing how perfect and touching it was.
