The director of the upcoming movie Verity has given fans a sneak peek at what’s to come. Based on Colleen Hoover’s 2018 thriller, the film—scheduled for release in 2026—follows Lowen, a ghostwriter who uncovers disturbing secrets while working for author Verity.
Michael Showalter directs Verity, starring Anne Hathaway as the main character, Verity, and Dakota Johnson as writer Lowen. Josh Hartnett plays Verity’s husband, Jeremy, and the film also features Brady Wagner, Daniel Echevarria, Michael Abbott Jr., and Asel Swango.
Director Showalter recently told ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender about his experience working with Anne Hathaway on the film Verity. He praised Hathaway, noting they had “a really great connection creatively and collaboratively,” which sparked their desire to team up on the project.
Showalter shared his positive experience working on Verity, describing it as a departure from his previous projects. He highlighted that the film is a thriller and characterized it as “dark and twisted.” You can find his complete statement below.
ScreenRant asked if working with Anne Hathaway on Verity came about because of a previous project. They also wanted to know what it was like working with her.
Michael Showalter and I worked really well together on ‘The Idea of You,’ both creatively and as collaborators. We enjoyed it so much that we actively looked for another project to do together, and this one felt like a perfect fit.
We finished filming Verity about a year ago, and I really enjoyed the experience. I can’t wait for people to see it! It won’t be released until next fall, but it’s very different from my other films like Oh. What. Fun. and The Idea of You. It’s a thriller – scary, suspenseful, and quite dark, but I’m really proud of how it turned out.
As the director mentioned, this isn’t the first time I’ve seen him collaborate with Anne Hathaway. I really enjoyed their work together on the 2024 film The Idea of You – it was a pretty big hit on Prime Video. And now, Verity seems like another fantastic opportunity for them to team up, which I’m definitely excited about!
Showalter is currently working on the upcoming holiday comedy, Oh. What. Fun, which premieres on Prime Video on December 3rd. The film centers around a family that reunites and realizes they’ve forgotten someone important.
I’ve noticed a definite shift in Showalter’s recent work. These last two films are much lighter in tone than anything he’s done before, and he’s actually talked about intentionally moving in this direction – acknowledging both a change in genre and a brighter overall feel.
Anne Hathaway has starred in many different types of movies, and her new film, Verity, is a perfect example of her versatility. She’s known for playing more cheerful characters, but Verity will be a darker, more challenging role, offering audiences a side of Hathaway they haven’t seen before.
People love a thrilling story, and movies based on Colleen Hoover’s books are especially popular. If the upcoming film delivers on its promise of being “dark and twisted,” Verity has the potential to be very successful.
