Michael J. Fox explained that Melora Hardin, who was originally cast as Marty McFly’s girlfriend Jennifer Parker, was replaced because she was too tall for the role. Her height simply didn’t fit the dynamic they were looking for in the film.
In his new memoir, Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum, Michael J. Fox remembers that as a child, his main concern was protecting himself. He was often made fun of for being short, enduring constant jokes and prejudice because of his size. While his height was helpful when he was a young actor playing even younger roles, it became a problem as he got older, particularly when trying to land romantic roles opposite taller actresses.
Like many films, Back to the Future faced casting challenges due to height requirements. Michael J. Fox replaced Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly, and this change also affected Melora Hardin, who had originally been cast as Marty’s girlfriend, Jennifer. Fox later expressed regret that this preference for taller actors led to Hardin being replaced by Claudia Wells, who is 5’4″.
Bob Zemeckis, a co-creator of Back to the Future, was initially worried that the height difference between Michael J. Fox and his co-star, Lea Thompson, would be noticeable to audiences, according to Fox. After asking people on set, he discovered the difference of a few inches probably wouldn’t be a problem. As Fox recalls, the women on the crew told him that in high school, popular girls usually don’t date much shorter guys.
Hardin Says Getting The Boot From Back To The Future Helped Her Thrive On The Office
Looking back, it’s amazing how things work out. Actress Hardin recently told Joe Vulpis on his podcast that getting fired from the show forty years ago actually set her up for the success she enjoys today. She admitted things would have likely gone very differently if she’d stayed, but at the time, as a teenager, it was a really tough blow to deal with. It felt like a major rejection then, but now she sees it as a turning point.
When I was 17, that was really difficult and upsetting for me,” she explained, recalling how significant her two-movie contract felt. “I did some promotional work, then started filming, but they replaced Eric with Michael J. Fox. I remember the situation unfolding differently than it was presented. Apparently, the two female executives at the time felt it undermined the male lead’s character to have him share scenes with an actress who was taller than him, so they made the change.
Back to the Future is currently available to stream on Netflix.
