I’d Like To See John Dutton Return In Y: Marshals. Why I Think It’s Possible Without Kevin Costner

With the announcement of Y: Marshals on CBS’s 2025-2026 schedule, I’ve been considering how the new Yellowstone spin-off can further develop Luke Grimes’ character, Kayce Dutton. I’m particularly interested in learning more about Kayce’s relationship with his father, a role famously played by Kevin Costner in the original series. I believe this new show is perfectly positioned to explore that dynamic, and it could do so successfully even without Costner’s involvement.

As you likely know, Kevin Costner departed Yellowstone before the show concluded, and the split wasn’t friendly. For months, there were rumors about his reasons for leaving and disagreements with the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, which led to his character, John, being written off. John was killed in the first episode of the show’s final season, and Costner didn’t appear in any further episodes.

Considering everything, it’s highly unlikely the actor who played John Dutton in Bull Durham will appear in Y: Marshals. As we’ve established, his Yellowstone character is dead, making a present-day appearance impossible. Even flashbacks seem improbable, given the circumstances of his exit from that show – he’d probably decline a role, though you can never say for sure. Still, there’s a simple way to bring John Dutton back, and I’m hoping the writers consider it.

You know, it’s easy to forget that Kevin Costner isn’t the only John Dutton we see. Josh Lucas plays him in the flashbacks, and honestly, I think bringing him back would be amazing, especially as they explore more of Kayce’s past. It would really add another layer to the story, I think.

I’m really excited about the new Kayce-focused Yellowstone spinoff! It has the potential to address something I’ve always felt was missing from the original series.

Throughout the series Yellowstone (available to stream on Peacock), Josh Lucas played a younger John Dutton in nine episodes. He did a fantastic job, and I especially enjoyed how those scenes filled in the backstory of the Dutton family.

One thing that always bothered me about the show was how Kayce’s backstory was handled. We constantly heard about his time in the military and his difficult relationship with his father, but we rarely saw those experiences actually play out. I really wanted the show to delve deeper into those parts of his life.

Luke Grimes also thinks exploring Kayce’s history would be compelling. He once mentioned that delving into Kayce’s time in the special forces and the resulting trauma could be fascinating. The new series Y: Marshals seems like a great opportunity to do that, and I’d be particularly interested in seeing how it impacts his relationship with John. They often clashed back then, and understanding that dynamic could reveal a lot about what shaped Kayce into the person he is now.

Paramount+ costs $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year. Subscribers can stream episodes of Y: Marshals the day after they air on CBS, as well as other popular shows like Landman and 1923. See the deal here.

Bringing back Josh Lucas as John Dutton and introducing a new, younger actor to play Kayce during his teenage and young adult years would be fantastic. CBS, please consider this! Until then, I’ll definitely be watching Y: Marshals on March 1st to see what happens next with the youngest Dutton’s story.
