Macaulay Culkin Addresses Potential Home Alone Sequel

You know, it’s hard to believe it’s been 35 years since Home Alone first hit theaters! That movie, with Macaulay Culkin, directed by Chris Columbus and penned by John Hughes, has just become a total tradition for so many of us during the holidays. It’s one of those films I absolutely have to watch every year!

This year, Macaulay Culkin has been touring with his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” show, where he talks to fans about the classic film Home Alone. According to reports, Culkin recently mentioned he’d be open to the idea of returning as Kevin McCallister in a possible Home Alone sequel, saying he wasn’t opposed to revisiting the role that launched his career.

Culkin explained it would need to be a perfect concept. He actually has an idea for a sequel: he’d play a single father – either a widower or divorced – who is so focused on work that he doesn’t notice his son is upset with him. The story would involve him getting locked out of the house, with his son being the one who’s set up the traps to keep him out.

Macaulay Culkin has an idea for a sequel where his character, Kevin McCallister, now plays the role of the burglars he once outsmarted. The story would center around Kevin trying to reconnect with his own son, and his home represents their strained relationship. As Culkin explains, it’s about Kevin needing to win back his son’s affection. He’s open to the idea if the script is right.

What are the Odds of Getting Another Home Alone Movie?

Released in 1990, Home Alone was a huge financial success, earning over $476 million globally on an $18 million budget. It led to a sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which came out in 1992 and grossed $358 million. Despite Macaulay Culkin having an idea for a new installment, the original director, Chris Columbus, seems hesitant about making another film in the Home Alone series.

So, it’s the 35th anniversary of Home Alone, and I was reading what director Chris Columbus had to say. Basically, he doesn’t see a reboot or another sequel happening. He feels Home Alone isn’t something you can just recreate – it was a perfect moment in time, and getting the original cast back together wouldn’t capture that same magic. He thinks it’s best left as a classic, and honestly, as much as I love the movie, I kind of agree!

Honestly, I’m with director Chris Columbus on this one – I don’t think it’s a good idea to try and remake something that was special so long ago. Some things are best left untouched, you know? But he did make a good point about the 1992 sequel; it worked because everyone was still fresh off the original and we hadn’t aged too much. That immediacy really helped, and I can see why it connected with audiences.

Fans can stream Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York on Disney+.
