The Rotten Tomatoes score is in for the new movie, and unfortunately, it’s part of a pattern of recent disappointments for Mark Wahlberg. This action sequel, directed by Simon Cellan Jones, continues the story from The Family Plan, which was released directly on Apple TV last year.
Okay, so I checked out the Rotten Tomatoes score for The Family Plan 2 after it dropped on the streaming service on November 21st, and it’s not looking great – currently sitting at a 20% rating. But, heads up, that’s only based on 10 reviews right now, so I’m expecting that score to probably change as more people weigh in.
Currently, critics seem to prefer the first movie over the sequel. The 2023 film has a 29% critics’ score, which means it’s generally considered poorly reviewed. While we don’t have audience scores for The Family Plan 2 yet, the first film received a modest 60% from viewers.
Mark Wahlberg returns as Dan Morgan, a former government assassin, in this sequel which takes place in Europe. The story follows Dan as he tries to keep his family safe when secrets from his past resurface. Michelle Monaghan plays his wife, Jessica, and the cast also includes Kit Harrington, Zoe Colletti, Van Crosby, and Peter and Theodore Lindsey.
Apple TV+
Despite mixed reviews from critics, The Family Plan was a big hit for Apple TV. The action comedy quickly became the most-watched movie ever on the streaming service after its release, and that success led to plans for a sequel. While it’s too soon to know how many people are watching Mark Wahlberg’s new film, it’s expected to perform well, though perhaps not as strongly as the first movie.
Okay, so I just read ScreenRant’s review of The Family Plan 2, and it’s…rough. Their critic, Gregory Nussen, really didn’t hold back – he pretty much found fault with everything. He gave it a 1 out of 10, which is a pretty brutal score, and he explained why in detail.
Simon Cellan Jones’ new film is a major disappointment – it’s so dull and lifeless that it’s actually depressing to watch. It feels like being forced to sit through a two-hour advertisement.
The sequel hasn’t been well-received by critics, which is a common trend for Mark Wahlberg’s recent movies. While Play Dirty (2025) got somewhat mixed reviews, it still only has a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Mark Wahlberg’s recent films haven’t performed well with critics. Flight Risk, released earlier this year, received a low 29% rating, and The Union (2024), an action comedy, only scored 35%. His last critically and popularly successful movie was Arthur the King (2024), earning scores of 70% from critics and an impressive 97% from audiences.
Okay, so critics aren’t loving The Family Plan 2, but honestly, I’ve noticed people usually seem to have fun with Mark Wahlberg’s action comedies. I’m really curious to see if this one catches on with general audiences – we’ll probably know for sure in the next few days if it’s a hit or not.
