It’s been nearly two decades since Brendan Fraser starred in The Mummy movies, and he’s now hinted that he might be back for a fourth film, exciting fans of the franchise.
The Mummy franchise concluded in 2008 with a disappointing sequel, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Although it made $403 million worldwide, critics didn’t like it, giving it a low 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As a result, Universal put the series on hold for nearly ten years. They then tried to relaunch their classic monster movies as an interconnected universe, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with plans for what they called the Dark Universe.
As a big monster movie fan, I was really excited when Tom Cruise’s The Mummy came out in 2017. It was supposed to be the start of a whole universe with classic monsters like Frankenstein and Dracula! Sadly, it just didn’t work out. The movie didn’t make enough money to cover how much it cost to make and advertise, so those plans were scrapped, which was a huge disappointment.
I’m so excited! Universal is finally bringing Brendan Fraser back as Rick O’Connell for a fourth Mummy movie! And he’s already promised fans it’s going to be something special – he wants to really deliver a sequel that finishes the story right.
Brendan Fraser says The Mummy 4 is the film he wanted to make 20 years ago

News broke in November that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to reprise their roles as Rick and Evie O’Connell in a fourth Mummy movie, continuing the story that began in 1999. While the plot is still secret, Fraser has stated this is the film he’d always hoped to make, rather than the previous installment, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
He told the Associated Press that the project he’d been hoping to create is finally happening. He said he’d been waiting for this opportunity for twenty years, describing it as a long-awaited sign, sometimes clear and sometimes subtle. Now, he’s ready to deliver what fans have been asking for.
He clarified that the third movie was made because NBC wanted to profit from the rights they owned for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

I originally envisioned a different film, but it never came to fruition. The third movie was essentially a combination of two ideas – it was tricky explaining this to the Associated Press reporter. NBC owned the broadcast rights for the Olympics that year, and that influenced the project, leading us to film in China. Ultimately, I really enjoyed working on Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, though.
Working in Shanghai was an amazing experience. I’m particularly proud of the third film we made – it really works as its own story. We assembled a new team and put everything we had into it.
