Gearbox is celebrating the holidays with a free update for Borderlands 4! The first Bounty Pack, titled ‘How Rush Saved Mercenary Day,’ is now available for both console and PC players. It’s a festive Borderlands story, putting a unique spin on a classic holiday tale.
This downloadable content lets players join forces with Rush, the leader of the Outbounders, to help spread holiday joy – and give the greedy Minister Screw a much-deserved comeuppance! Along with this story content, players can also find new gear and cosmetic items. Gearbox has also shared the reason why they’re releasing this update for free.
A Gearbox representative explained that the holiday Bounty Pack was intended to be delivered by the end of the year. However, the team’s focus on making Borderlands 4 even better meant they didn’t have enough time to include all the content they originally wanted in Bounty Pack 1.

The remaining Bounty Packs are available as paid downloadable content, but are already included if you own the Deluxe Edition, Super Deluxe Edition, or the original Bounty Pack Bundle. Gearbox is adding a fifth Bounty Pack to the bundle soon, though they haven’t shared details about what it will include. If you’ve already bought the Bounty Pack Bundle or one of those special editions, you’ll get the fifth pack for free.
Around mid-December, Gearbox will release a free update introducing Bloomreaper the Invincible as the first in a series of incredibly challenging boss fights. These “invincible bosses” will be significantly tougher than before, with increased health, more powerful attacks, and unique abilities. Players who manage to defeat them will be rewarded with new Legendary items.
In early 2026, Borderlands 4 will get a new story expansion called “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned,” featuring a new playable character named C4SH. Gearbox will also release a free update in 2026 that adds a Takedown mode to the game.
Okay, so I was listening in on the latest Take-Two investor call, and it sounds like Borderlands 4, while having a HUGE launch and being one of the best-selling games of 2025, didn’t actually sell as many copies as they’d hoped. It’s a little disappointing to hear, even with how successful the launch was!
