“The Punisher: One Last Kill” successfully brings back the intense and realistic portrayal of Frank Castle. This thrilling story delves into the devastating effects of PTSD while delivering exciting action on the streets of New York City, and it’s a fantastic performance by Jon Bernthal as the iconic Punisher. The film proves that Marvel’s “Special Presentation” format is a great way to explore lesser-known characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel’s Special Presentations are great for highlighting lesser-known characters, as seen with stories like One Last Kill. They also serve as introductions to completely new faces, such as in Werewolf by Night. Whether it’s bringing attention to underutilized heroes like Howard the Duck or showcasing newcomers like Richard Rider, these characters all deserve their own dedicated specials.
Howard The Duck
It’s clear from past attempts that a full-length Howard the Duck movie isn’t popular with audiences, but a shorter format might work better. The character has a lot of comedic potential within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Howard the Duck has appeared in significant storylines in the What If…? series, he hasn’t had a chance to be the main focus, even though he first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy over ten years ago.
Marvel has a fantastic creative talent available – Seth Green – who could be perfect for a Howard the Duck project. A Howard the Duck presentation, potentially starring and written by Green, would bring a unique, quirky style – similar to his work on Robot Chicken – to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The ‘Special Presentation’ format, as seen with the Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special, is ideal for trying out bold and different ideas like this.
Ghost Rider
Many popular actors, including Ryan Gosling and Keanu Reeves, have expressed interest in playing Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Marvel decides against the traditional Johnny Blaze character, they could bring back Gabriel Luna, who previously played Robbie Reyes in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series. Regardless, fans are eager to see Ghost Rider join the MCU.
Ghost Rider’s look – a motorcycle-riding hero with a flaming skull – instantly makes him one of Marvel’s most visually striking antiheroes, and he’s perfect for a live-action adaptation. Marvel’s Special Presentations are a great way to showcase unique and edgy characters like him.
Xialing & The Ten Rings
The post-credits scene in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings revealed a lot about the future of the Ten Rings organization, but it hasn’t really connected to anything else in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet. The scene showed Shang-Chi’s sister, Xialing, taking control of their father’s criminal empire and starting to train a team of female assassins alongside the existing, all-male group.
It’s been five years, and we still haven’t seen a sequel to Shang-Chi. The next step might be a special presentation, similar in style to The Godfather Part II. It could tell two stories: one about Xialing now leading the Ten Rings, and another showing how Wenwu originally built the organization.
Silver Surfer
The movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps briefly touched on the Silver Surfer’s sad history, but it happened so quickly and with so much else going on that it didn’t have time to fully explore the story. A standalone special could expand on those short flashbacks, creating a complete sci-fi tragedy about a woman compelled to make a heartbreaking sacrifice for an evil cosmic being.
Julia Garner was great in First Steps, but her character deserved more screen time than just a few scenes – her story has a lot of potential. Giving her the role of Silver Surfer would be a fantastic opportunity to show off her range and talent, allowing her to truly explore the character beyond a smaller role.
The Original Ant-Man & The Wasp
Currently, Ant-Man and Wasp refer to Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne, but the original heroes with those names were Hope’s parents, Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne. I’ve been hoping to see a separate movie focusing on them ever since they first appeared in flashbacks in the first Ant-Man film. Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer have great on-screen chemistry as Hank and Janet, and a story about their crime-fighting days in the 1960s would give us a fresh look at the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Honestly, after that weird, obviously fake-looking effect with the falling tech in One Last Kill, I’m seriously doubting Marvel Television can pull off de-aging Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer convincingly for a whole hour. It just feels risky. But, you know what? Maybe they could sidestep the problem altogether and do that Ant-Man and the Wasp prequel as an animated series. That could be a really smart solution.
The Original Guardians Of The Galaxy
One of the extra scenes after the credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 shows Sylvester Stallone’s character, Stakar Ogord, bringing together a team of old allies, inspired by Yondu’s sacrifice. This team is based on the original Guardians of the Galaxy from the comics. Director James Gunn cast several well-known actors, including Ving Rhames as Charlie-27, Michelle Yeoh as Aleta Ogord, Michael Rosenbaum as Martinex, and Miley Cyrus voicing the character Mainframe.
Marvel hasn’t revisited that first version of the Guardians team. It’s fun to imagine, though – a team-up of John Rambo, Evelyn Wang, and Marsellus Wallace in a Marvel space adventure would be incredibly exciting!
Old Man Blade
Wesley Snipes’ surprise appearance as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine was a huge hit with fans. Seeing him playfully argue with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, battle mutants, and deliver his signature lines – including the classic about people trying to ice-skate uphill – was a real treat. It’s frustrating that Marvel has had trouble getting a new Blade movie made, repeatedly pushing back the release date and changing creative teams, while a great Blade is readily available.
A Special Presentation would be an ideal way to revisit Wesley Snipes as Blade for a new solo film. It could offer a satisfying conclusion to his version of the character, portraying an older, seasoned Blade nearing the end of his journey – similar to the movie Logan. Snipes would be perfect for that kind of role, and it would be a fitting tribute to the original Marvel film hero.
Nova
I’ve been hoping Marvel would introduce the Nova character for years, ever since 2018. The Nova Corps were first shown in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy, but were quickly defeated and killed off-screen at the start of Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos destroys Xandar and the entire Nova Corps while searching for the Space Stone, and this event is actually central to Nova’s backstory.
The last member of the Nova Corps passes on his powers to Richard Rider, who then becomes the new Nova superhero. While a full movie seems unlikely because most viewers wouldn’t know the character, Disney could introduce Nova effectively with a special presentation showing his journey from the events of Infinity War to becoming a fully established hero.
