Horror games typically feature either capable protagonists who are equipped to handle frightening situations, or completely helpless ones – there’s not much middle ground. While a skilled protagonist can feel empowering, that doesn’t always fit the tone of a horror game. This often leads to gameplay that’s more focused on action, and while that approach can work, as some games demonstrate, it shifts the focus away from pure horror.
Interestingly, protagonists who are vulnerable and not fully prepared for scary situations often make for a more compelling experience. Survival horror games create tension because it’s easier to connect with a character who is genuinely afraid, while a well-equipped character can make the player feel too safe. Ultimately, protagonists who are a little unprepared are really important for building the spooky atmosphere in horror games.
The Exit 8’s Main Character Just Wants to Leave
This game deliberately slows you down and encourages close observation. It’s subtle and unsettling, sharing similarities with Backrooms games – familiar environments with strange, hidden details. Instead of relying on sudden scares, it creates a lingering sense of unease.
The game’s concept is straightforward, but it’s a surprisingly difficult experience – much like what the player character goes through. If you don’t pay close attention to details, you’ll be stuck repeating the same events endlessly. But if you can spot even minor inconsistencies, you have a chance of breaking free.
Rebecca Is Trying to do Her Job in The Mortuary Assistant
The game falls into the job simulator category, and this creates a disconnect. The main character, Rebecca, is thrown into a terrifying situation she wasn’t prepared for, as she initially believed she’d simply be working as a mortuary assistant. Her early reactions, like calling her boss crazy, feel completely natural and make her a more believable and sympathetic character.
Okay, so my first night shift at the mortuary was… unexpected. Turns out, it’s not just bodies we’re dealing with, but a full-on demon possession! And my boss? Didn’t think to mention that during the interview or training, naturally. Seriously, I could have politely declined this job if I’d known! Now I’m stuck here all night trying to figure out what demon we’ve got and which body it’s decided to hang out in. Talk about a stressful first day!
Miles From Outlast Got More Than He Expected as an Investigative Journalist
Miles Upshur, an investigative journalist, gets a mysterious email hinting at disturbing activity at Mount Massive Asylum. Driven by the tip, he decides to infiltrate the asylum with only his camera, unknowingly stepping into a terrifying ordeal he never could have imagined.
Driven by his desire for a big story, Miles ends up inside the asylum, but it’s far from a typical stay. The patients have seized control of most of the facility, with some even pretending to be the doctors. This creates complete chaos and makes escaping nearly impossible once Miles is inside.
Aya Didn’t Choose Her Parents in Mad Father
I recently played Mad Father, and wow, it really got to me. You play as Aya, and she finds out her father isn’t the person she believed him to be one night. What makes her story so impactful is that she’s just a kid who has to deal with this huge, awful revelation. She didn’t choose her parents or this situation, so it’s genuinely upsetting to experience her journey. It’s a pretty distressing game, honestly.
One night, Aya discovers that test subjects have escaped from her father’s secret basement lab. She already knows he’s been unfaithful to her mother with his assistant, Maria, and that he conducts experiments on people. While she’s initially more disturbed by the revelations of the game itself than by the experiments themselves, this reaction highlights just how deeply twisted her father’s plans really are.
Cassie Wants to Find Her Friend in Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach – Ruin
So, from what I gather, Gregory hasn’t really gotten his life back together after the first game. That’s why Cassie’s heading back to the old, shut-down Pizzaplex to try and find him. She thinks it’s just an abandoned building, so she’s expecting to maybe find him trapped somewhere inside, not realizing anything crazy is still going on. She just thinks he’s stuck and needs help getting out.
Cassie quickly discovered that the animatronics at any Fazbear location aren’t what they seem. She’s now being chased by dangerous robots and, while trying to survive, has to deal with the complicated issues caused by the Vanny Mask. Even though she made it through the nightmare at the Pizzaplex, things didn’t end how she expected.
Silent Hill f Starts with Hinako Learning About Her Marriage
The story begins with an unexpected event that plunges Hinako into a terrifying situation – her hometown is being overrun by a nightmare world. She discovers her parents plan to marry her off to settle their debts, and overwhelmed, she seeks out her friends while trying to come to terms with a future she’s desperate to avoid.
When Hinako is with her friends, a strange and deadly force descends on their town. It causes spider lilies to bloom everywhere, and these lilies ensnare and kill people, beginning with Hinako’s close friend, Sakuko. The events that unfold are unpredictable because Hinako lacks crucial information, only discovering it as she struggles to survive.
Ethan Winters Is Driven by Love in Resident Evil 7
Unlike Leon and Grace, Ethan didn’t know anything about the situation at the start of Resident Evil 7. He only knew his wife, Mia, had disappeared three years prior, and a recent message gave him hope of finding her – a hope he clung to despite the years that had passed. While this could be seen as a touching love story, it’s a dangerous decision within the world of RE.
Ethan is introduced to the dangerous infections prevalent in the Resident Evil world – infections typically hidden from the public. Though he lacks any training for handling such a situation, he manages to survive the terrifying events of Resident Evil 7, which ultimately prepares him for the challenges of RE8.
Mio and Mayu Wanted to Visit a Childhood Location in Fatal Frame 2
The story begins with Mio and Mayu wanting to revisit a place from their childhood. They never imagined their trip to Minakami Village would be prompted by mysterious crimson butterflies, or that the village was built over a dangerous Abyss that demands regular sacrifices to stay contained.
Mio and Mayu are trapped in a terrifying situation: the village has chosen them for the next Crimson Sacrifice. It’s hard to escape, especially because Mayu is highly sensitive to spirits and easily manipulated. Throughout the game, Mio desperately follows her twin, searching for a way to leave the village without either of them being killed.
