Be warned, this contains spoilers for From season 4, episode 5, “What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been.” After four years, the show finally reveals the meaning of Jade Herrera’s visions. Soon after arriving in the mysterious town, Jade (David Alpay) started experiencing these visions, which often featured a strange symbol, a soldier from the Civil War (Dylan Bailey), a man tragically crushed by a boulder (André Pettigrew), a man holding a skull filled with blood (Sean Skerry), or Christopher (Thom Payne).
In the season 2 finale, I was shocked when Jade looked up and realized the roots hanging from the cave ceiling actually formed the symbol he’d been seeing in his visions. It all clicked even more when I watched season 3, episode 8 of From. That episode explained how the children of the town once poured all their hope into those roots, and that’s how they grew into the massive bottle tree we see.
By the end of season 3 of From, Jade discovers that he and Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) have repeatedly lived in the Town in different lifetimes. Jade realizes one of his past lives was Christopher, explaining his visions and why the children kept saying “Anghkooey”—a word meaning “remember.”
As the fourth season began, viewers were still wondering about the meaning of the figures in Jade’s visions: the Civil War soldier, the man crushed by a boulder, and the man with the blood-filled skull. The answer comes in season 4, episode 5, during a hallucinatory trip Jade experiences after taking mushrooms. There, he meets a younger version of himself, played by Viggo Hanvelt, and finally understands the meaning of his recurring visions.
All Of Jade’s Visions Are Reincarnations Of Him From Past Lives
While traveling, Jade is led by a younger version of himself to Colony House. There, he finds the four people he’s been seeing in visions – all playing violins on the porch. He suddenly understands that, like Christopher, these figures are actually past lives of his own. He realizes the visions weren’t meant to scare him, but to help him remember who he truly is and his connection to the Town.
The visions also reveal a crucial detail: each version of Jade was killed not by the monsters from ‘From,’ but by the other people living there. Young Jade explains that this has happened in every previous cycle – once he shares the truth about his past lives, the others turn on him and kill him, and this is especially damaging for Tabitha.
In season 4, episode 1, the Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes) explains his enjoyment of turning the town’s residents against each other. He seems to relish the violent ends of Jade’s story – like the man with a spike through his eye or the one crushed by a boulder – but this time, things might play out differently.
Jade’s Latest Vision Can Unlock The Show’s Biggest Remaining Mysteries
Jade’s past visions are finally falling into place, but his most recent one takes a surprising turn. He finds himself in the monsters’ caves, inside a tomb with a deceased child who utters the mysterious word, “Anghkooey.” The meaning of this word is currently unknown to viewers, but it will likely be explained soon. After waking up, Jade informs Boyd Stevens that he understands where to find something crucial and how to rescue the children.
Jade recently found something that could finally solve the biggest mysteries of From – like what’s going on with the Man in Yellow, the children, and the Town itself, and whether anyone can ever escape. Now, the big question is whether Jade can succeed where his past lives failed, or if he’s destined to meet the same fate – being killed by the townspeople when they discover the truth about him.
