Combiners arrived at a time when fans were already captivated by transforming robots, and they fit well within the story’s universe. They escalated the Cybertronian war, sparking a competition to build even more powerful weapons. However, it quickly became apparent that some combiners were significantly stronger than others.

Computron Is A Genius, For Better And Worse

I remember towards the later episodes of the original Generation One cartoon, we started seeing more of those giant robots formed by combining smaller ones. Predaking stands out as a combiner who is dangerous whether in robot mode or combined. Each of the Predacons is a formidable fighter on their own. But his real power comes from combining with his trailer and the drone Godbomber, forming the even stronger God Ginrai. When he’s fully focused, he can easily defeat other combiners, especially using his devastating God Fire Guts attack, which turns him into a massive fireball.

Optimus Maximus Merges Optimus With His Greatest Allies

Combiners aren’t new, and several have existed before. But usually, they’ve combined with vehicles or drones, rather than other robots. This all changed when a powerful artifact called the Enigma of Combination unexpectedly forced Optimus Prime to merge with Ironhide, Mirage, Prowl, and Sunstreaker.

This combination isn’t common, but given it’s led by the powerful Optimus Prime, it makes sense that it’s seen as the strongest. Optimus Maximus even defeated Devastator in combat, and within the Prime Wars storyline, he’s considered the ultimate counter to Decepticon combiners.
