Morgan Spector, portraying the extreme capitalist and oil baron George Russell in HBO’s The Gilded Age, surprisingly identifies as a socialist off-screen. He has enjoyed contrasting his personal beliefs with his character, rather than merging them. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he stated that introducing criticism of the character into his performance would make it less engaging. Instead, he emphasized that to truly embody the character, one must adopt their values wholeheartedly.
Now, Spector is channeling this extensive experience into advocating for his political beliefs. He recently filmed a campaign commercial for Zohran Mamdani‘s mayoral bid, where he appears as Mr. Russell. In the ad, while dressed as the oil baron, he reads an August 30th New York Times article about the Hamptons elite fearing Mamdani after his primary victory over Andrew Cuomo. These wealthy individuals are hosting exclusive pro-Cuomo dinners while Mamdani gains support by simply stating, “I don’t think we should have billionaires.” From George Russell’s mouth, these words echo the sentiments of the 1880s robber barons.

The video is packed with noteworthy instances, but some standouts include Spector’s distinctive pronunciation of “Cu-oh-mo” and his self-satisfied tone when disclosing that a Cuomo supporter previously worked for Melania Trump. However, the most captivating moment occurs during his recitation of the quote: “His social media is amusing, and his proposals seem reasonable until you delve into the details and they’re not achievable.” As this sentence unfolds, Spector fixes his gaze on the camera, flaunting a crystal glass and an alluring, menacing smile. Fans of The Gilded Age in New York can exercise their right to vote on November 4, and let’s hope a fresh season of the popular series isn’t far behind!
