The upcoming remake of ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ will significantly update the original 3D version of Hyrule.
To update the gameplay for the new Switch 2, some of the older ideas and systems in Ocarina of Time will need to be redesigned. This will likely affect the story and characters. Navi, Link’s fairy companion, is the character most closely tied to both the story and how the game is played, so she’s likely to see the biggest changes.
Navi played a key role in explaining and using the Z-targeting system in Ocarina of Time, and she helped players by offering guidance. However, many players didn’t find her to be a particularly endearing character. With Ocarina of Time being re-released on the Switch 2, there’s an opportunity to reconsider Navi and perhaps appreciate her more.
Ocarina of Time Created the Most Annoying Gaming Icon Ever With Navi
The upcoming Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will likely need to update how the character Navi functions within the game, and this could lead to changes in her personality as well – hopefully for the better.
Navi is a character that’s hard for any Zelda fan to forget. However, many players have always found her irritating and unpleasant to have in the game.
Navi’s constant calling out to Link – especially her repeated “hellooo” – can be really frustrating for players. While her “hey, listen” is now seen as charming and nostalgic, it can become annoying after a while.
Even Link in the had enough of her:
Navi’s voice is instantly recognizable, so the game can’t change it too much. Developers will need to find a balance – making her less irritating while still keeping her helpful and optimistic personality.
One of the biggest criticisms of Navi is her lack of emotional connection with Link. Famously, she simply flies away at the game’s end without saying goodbye, which deeply hurts Link. He’s so upset by this that he ends up lost and wandering in the Lost Woods as a direct result.
The remake of Ocarina of Time will probably include voice acting, which could give Navi more personality and strengthen her connection with Link. Perhaps at the end of the game, Navi will express sadness about leaving Link, explaining it’s simply what fairies are meant to do.
Navi Could Revolutionize Zelda Puzzle-Solving Thanks to the Switch 2 Hardware
Okay, so the biggest change with Navi in the new game is definitely how she actually works during gameplay. It’s not just about what she says, but how she impacts what I’m doing as a player.
In the original Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 64, Navi’s main job was to visually highlight whatever the player was targeting, making the somewhat distracting targeting system more bearable. She also guided players through the 3D world, which was especially helpful considering the game’s controls were a bit awkward by today’s standards, before the widespread use of dual analog sticks.
While those features will likely still work, they aren’t as impactful as they were when Ocarina of Time originally changed 3D adventure gaming on the N64. However, the Switch 2’s new capabilities could create exciting opportunities to reimagine Navi’s role.
With the Switch 2’s new mouse controls, it’s now possible to use Navi – Link’s fairy companion – to select items on the screen. The game Twilight Princess HD previously tested this idea, making Navi a natural fit for the role. In a potential Switch 2 remake, she could even be used to interact with objects far away, creating new puzzle-solving opportunities.
As a huge fan, I’m really hoping the Switch 2 remake of Ocarina of Time finally gives Navi the upgrade she deserves! They have a perfect opportunity to make her a much better character – both in terms of her personality and how she actually helps you in the game. Honestly, fleshing out her character would be awesome because it could really lay the groundwork for what Nintendo does with her story in Majora’s Mask later on. I’m excited to see them take a fresh look at her!
Nintendo hasn’t announced a release date for the rumored Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but you can still play the original Nintendo 64 version on either Switch console with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.
