Square Enix is actively remaking classic entries in the Dragon Quest series. Following the successful release of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake last year, fans will be pleased to know that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is launching next month.
The announcement of *Dragon Quest VII Reimagined* during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct led many to wonder why the seventh game in the series was getting a remake before *Dragon Quest* IV, V, and VI. Series creator Yuji Horii actually addressed this question during a recent Japanese livestream.
This conversation happened during a livestream on the “Yuubou & Mashirito no KosoKoso Housoukyoku” channel on September 15th. Yuji Horii and Kazuhiko “Mashirito” Torishima regularly co-host monthly streams on this channel, starting in early 2025.
Around 44 minutes and 45 seconds into the stream, Mashirito asks Yuji Horii why Dragon Quest VII was remade before Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI, specifically pointing out the unusual order – suggesting they expected 4, 5, and 6 to come first.
Horii-san responded to this, of which our translation is as follows:
Yuji Horii: “A lot of things are moving around, but it was just done first by chance.”
Trying to understand the comment, Mashirito repeated it, adding the number 7. He explained, “Many things are happening, but VII was completed first, purely by coincidence.”
Around 45 minutes and 20 seconds into the conversation, Mashirito suggested that someone wasn’t necessarily stopping activities, while Horii repeatedly denied having said so.
Shortly afterward, there was this conversation between Yuji Horii and the hat-wearing MC Naz Chris:
Yuji Horii: “As I said just now, we want to make them playable on ongoing platforms.”
Naz Chris: “Does that mean VII is simply progressing smoothly?”
Yuji Horii mentioned that development was ongoing and they’d made significant headway.
Naz Chris wondered if the numerous chapter divisions in IV might be contributing to the delays.
Yuji Horii: “Well, well…” *laughs*
You can watch the Japanese livestream recording right here. Just so you know, the information we discussed starts around the 44 minute and 45 second mark.
The updated version of Dragon Quest III came out before the remakes of Dragon Quest I & II, which was intentional because the story of Dragon Quest III happens earlier in the timeline. While remakes of Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI might be taking longer to develop – likely because those games are connected – Dragon Quest VII is a separate story and could be released independently.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will be available worldwide on February 6th of next year for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam and the Microsoft Store).
