A YouTuber filming at night with a special camera recorded a massive ray and a type of shark that scientists had never before seen in its natural habitat.
Barny Dillarstone is a YouTuber who films underwater wildlife by dropping cameras into the ocean. He hopes to capture footage of animals in their natural habitat.
For his newest endeavor, Dillarstone lowered a night-vision camera 700 feet into the Indian Ocean near Bali, Indonesia, specifically off the coast of an area known as ‘Black Magic Island’. He believes he’s the first person to ever attempt this type of underwater filming.
His deep-sea discoveries
Dillarstone’s early recordings identified the familiar Western Spotted Gummy Shark, along with other fish, and later, a Bluntnose Sixgill Shark. Dillarstone notes that this shark is an incredibly ancient species, predating even some dinosaurs.
During his dives, Dillarstone also filmed a shark he couldn’t identify. Unable to figure out what it was, he reached out to leading shark experts who finally identified it as an ‘Indonesian Houndshark’.
He stated, “To my knowledge, this is the first time anyone has ever captured this animal on video while it was still alive.”

Dillarstone spotted a massive stingray – about as tall as himself, he said. He noted that the sharks kept a respectful distance, observing it from afar.
