The next big update to World of Warcraft, called Midnight, will be released on March 2, 2026. It’s the eleventh expansion pack for the game and the second part of a larger story arc called the Worldsoul Saga. Midnight takes players back to a beloved location in the game world, and it’s building towards a huge final conflict. Blizzard revealed details about the expansion over the summer and showed it off at Gamescom, highlighting its focus on the escalating war between the forces of Light and Void.
The next World of Warcraft expansion, Midnight, takes place in a completely revamped Quel’Thalas, where a massive Void invasion is underway. This invasion is orchestrated by Xal’atath, who weakened Azeroth during the events of The War Within, allowing the powerful voidlord Dimensius to strike. The Void’s goal is to seize control of the Sunwell—a powerful source of magic—and spread fear across the world. Players will need to bring the scattered elven clans back together, team up with ancient allies, and fight alongside the forces of the Light in a final stand against the encroaching darkness. Key locations in the campaign will include Eversong Woods, Zul’Aman, Harandar, and the Voidstorm.
The Midnight update brings highly anticipated features like player housing, along with a new playable race called the Haranir. These ancient people live amongst the roots of the hidden zone Harandar, and their buildings blend with the natural magic of early Azeroth. Players will have more control over their campaign path after finishing Eversong Woods. The update continues the Worldsoul Saga storyline, featuring familiar characters like Wrathion, Khadgar, and Alexstrasza.
We’re updating how new and returning players start their adventures! New players will now go directly from Exile’s Reach into a story-focused version of Dragonflight, experiencing the key moments of the expansion and reaching level 70. Returning players can take a guided tour with Jaina or Thrall in Arathi Highlands, getting gear appropriate for their level and learning important gameplay features like flying and interrupting enemy attacks. Plus, we’re adding a quick way to catch up on the story of The War Within – designed to get players from level 70 to 80 and ready for Midnight, continuing the Worldsoul Saga – in just a few hours.
