Despite a strong start, the movie Wicked: For Good is currently experiencing a downturn in ticket sales. It began with a very successful opening weekend before Thanksgiving, bringing in $147 million domestically – more than the original film’s $112.5 million opening. This made it the highest-grossing opening weekend ever for a movie adapted from a Broadway show.
Honestly, I was surprised to see the film’s numbers dip over Thanksgiving weekend. It made $61.7 million domestically, which was actually less than the original Wicked film made during its second weekend over the same holiday – that one brought in $81.2 million! The sequel dropped a huge 58% in attendance, and that’s really unusual because Thanksgiving is usually a big moviegoing weekend and films don’t usually fall that much week to week.
According to Deadline, Wicked: For Good is expected to make $15.6 million domestically this weekend. However, this represents a significant drop of 74.7% from its opening weekend, indicating the film is quickly losing momentum after a strong start.
The new movie, Wicked: For Good, released in 2025, isn’t doing as well as the original Wicked. The 2024 film earned $36.4 million domestically during its third weekend – more than twice the amount the new movie made – and its attendance only decreased by 55.1%.
Movies released just before Thanksgiving usually see a drop in ticket sales during their third weekend, but this decrease is generally between 50% and 60%. Here’s a look at how recent, major movies released before Thanksgiving have performed over their second and third weekends.
| Title | Thanksgiving Weekend Drop | Weekend 3 Drop |
|---|---|---|
| Wicked: For Good (2025) | -58% | -74.7% (estimated) |
| Wicked (2024) | -27.9% | -55.1% |
| Gladiator II (2024) | -43.6% | -59.5% |
| The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023) | -34.9% | -51.2% |
| Trolls Band Together (2023) | -40.6% | -56% |
| The Menu (2022) | -39.2% | -36.6% |
| Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) | -45% | -57.2% |
It’s unclear why For Good is currently struggling. Although it’s competing with the popular animated film Zootopia 2, the first Wicked movie successfully competed against Moana 2, which was an even bigger hit, back in 2024.
Although reviews for Wicked: For Good aren’t as overwhelmingly positive as those for the original film, audiences clearly love it. It currently has a 68% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a fantastic 93% audience score based on over 10,000 reviews, and an A CinemaScore – indicating strong positive reactions from moviegoers.
