A sequel to the show Malcolm in the Middle is in the works, showing what the characters are up to now, but unfortunately, one of the original cast members won’t be returning – and it’s for a legitimate reason.
Malcolm in the Middle premiered on Fox in January 2000 and became a hit, running for seven seasons and a total of 151 episodes.
The show featured Frankie Muniz in the main role and focused on his character’s difficult relationship with his quirky family.
Disney+ is bringing back ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ with a four-episode revival called ‘Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair’ in 2026, but one of the original cast members won’t be returning.
Dewey actor Erik Per Sullivan won’t be in Malcolm in the Middle revival
Frankie Muniz, known for his role in ‘Malcolm in the Middle,’ recently got together with his former co-stars Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson.

Frankie Muniz, who played Malcolm in “Malcolm in the Middle,” shared a photo with the actors who played his older brothers, Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson. Erik Per Sullivan, who played his younger brother Dewey, wasn’t included in the picture.
That’s because Sullivan isn’t participating in the reboot, due to his attending university.
Bryan Cranston, known for his role as Hal in Malcolm in the Middle, shared on the Fly on the Wall podcast that he spoke with Frankie Muniz after learning the show would be revived. He told Muniz the good news, and Muniz responded with excitement, but then immediately said he wasn’t interested in participating, despite being happy about the revival.
He’s attending Harvard, currently pursuing his master’s degree there. He’s incredibly intelligent, but hasn’t been involved in acting since he was a child, saying he hasn’t acted since around age nine and doesn’t have an interest in it now.
Dewey will still be a character on the show, but Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will now play him. There’s also a change with the character of Jamie; Anthony Timpano will be taking over the role previously played by James and Lukas Rodriguez.
