The 1994 movie Street Fighter isn’t considered a great video game adaptation, but it’s become famous for a single, unforgettable performance: Raul Julia’s.
Everyone else aimed for a serious tone, but Julia embraced over-the-top acting, which surprisingly made the movie not only bearable, but often fun to watch.
I know the movie has fans, but honestly, it’s pretty average. When adapting a video game to film, it’s usually best to embrace a campy, over-the-top style. Consider the Super Mario Bros. Movie – it’s basically just bright colors and familiar sounds for an hour and a half, and it’s on track to make a billion dollars. That shows what audiences are responding to.
The upcoming Street Fighter movie, set to release in 2026, seems to be heading in the right direction if enjoying the process is key to making a good video game adaptation. The cast is a major reason for this optimism – they’re not only having fun, but they’re also committed to the action and physicality of the roles.
Street Fighter’s Action Sequences Will Make or Break the Movie

Although the series now has a detailed history, it’s worth remembering its simple origins from almost 40 years ago: just two people battling each other with their bare hands.
Video game movies often stumble by attempting to closely follow a game’s storyline. This can unfortunately diminish the fun and emotional connection that made the game special in the first place. Films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the 2021 Mortal Kombat understand this – they prioritize exciting action over a complex or tightly-woven plot. While they do have stories, those stories mainly serve to connect the action sequences.
When adapting a video game into a movie, it’s usually best to embrace a playful, over-the-top style. Trying to be serious often doesn’t work as well.
The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie is a much stronger adaptation because, like other modern game-to-film projects, it’s based on a well-known fighting game. A smart move the filmmakers made was casting actors who actually knew martial arts. While this sometimes meant the acting and dialogue weren’t perfect, that’s not what audiences expect from a Mortal Kombat movie. People are there for the action and intense fights, and despite some weaknesses, the film delivers on that front.
One thing Street Fighter has going for it is a clear vision. It’s embracing its identity as a purely entertaining, exaggerated, and frankly silly movie about fighting. And what better way to achieve that than by casting actors who can actually fight? Not only does Street Fighter deliver on this core element, but it seems to be covering all its bases to create a well-rounded experience.
Street Fighter’s Choices are Letting the Cast Play to their Strengths
Ultimately, it’s important to remember that MMA fighters are performers. While it’s definitely more about fighting than traditional sports, it’s still entertainment designed for an audience. These athletes aren’t just comfortable with crowd interaction—they actually feed off the energy of the fans.
To truly capture the spirit of Street Fighter, it makes perfect sense to cast performers who understand the excitement of live combat and connecting with an audience. That’s why using WWE wrestlers was a natural choice. Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes are masters at storytelling through their matches – they even starred in one of the most memorable storylines in WWE, which reached its peak with Cody’s win at WrestleMania XL.
Casting professional wrestlers in these roles is a smart move, allowing them to fully showcase their skills. Someone playing Guile needs to be a strong performer both physically and verbally. Akuma requires someone who can convincingly portray intensity and moral complexity. WWE performers already excel at these things, making them a perfect fit – they bring that experience to life every time they step into the ring.
The movie doesn’t try to be anything it’s not: a wildly entertaining, over-the-top action film with crazy fight scenes. And to make those scenes really work, it’s essential that the actors can actually fight!
Given Andrew Koji’s skills, he’s a natural fit for the role of Ryu. While many viewers may recognize him from Bullet Train, he’s already proven his talent both as an actor and in martial arts, having starred in the Cinemax series Warrior, which was originally conceived by Bruce Lee.
Honestly, I think this movie could really work if they gave some of the supporting characters, especially those with MMA experience, a chance to shine in the fight scenes. It’s a simple idea, but most video game movies just don’t get it right, so focusing on that could be the key to making this one a hit!
Casting Real Life Wrestlers and MMA Fighters Results in the Perfect Blend of Action and Comedy
This unique quality is what should allow Street Fighter to successfully blend exciting action with humor, and intense fighting with a compelling story.

The latest trailer makes it clear: the new Street Fighter game is focusing heavily on visual style. It’s also aiming for a compelling story that builds on the established history and characters. While I previously suggested a deep story wasn’t essential, Street Fighter actually has a richer backstory than many other fighting games.
Casting talent with experience in performance – whether it’s speaking into a microphone or acting on screen – allows them to fully showcase their skills. For characters like Guile, you need someone who can convincingly portray both a fighter and a charismatic speaker. And for a complex character like Akuma, someone who understands intensity and moral gray areas is perfect. WWE performers, who do this kind of work regularly, are a natural fit.
Certain characters are more fully developed than others, with intricate histories and internal struggles. When executed well, this depth can create a truly compelling narrative. The key is skillful execution – it requires not only a strong script, but also talented actors to bring those words to life.
Karl Urban joining the cast of Mortal Kombat II is exciting, and it highlights how a great actor can really improve a movie – think of Raul Julia’s work. You need someone who can convincingly portray a character, and for this film, that means someone who can really fight. That’s why bringing in talented wrestlers and MMA fighters is such a smart move.
