A new trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is out, and fans are surprised by Glenn Close’s appearance. The movie is a prequel, continuing the story after The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023). It focuses on the 50th Hunger Games, the one in which Haymitch Abernathy participated.
Woody Harrelson famously played Haymitch in the original Hunger Games movies. The new trailer suggests the story will have a thrilling journey, even though we know how it ends. It’s also notable to see Glenn Close appear in the trailer, though she’s somewhat unrecognizable.
Glenn Close’s Character In The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping Explained
Glenn Close will be playing Drusilla Sickle in the new Hunger Games movie, Sunrise on the Reaping. Drusilla is the escort for the tributes from District 12 – a role previously held by Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket in the original films. Both Drusilla and a younger version of Effie, played by Elle Fanning, will appear in the movie.
Drusilla, like Effie, was responsible for guiding the tributes through the preparations for the Hunger Games – everything from getting them ready to meet the public to finally sending them into the arena. Both women seemed focused more on the spectacle of the Games than on the well-being of the tributes themselves, simply performing their duties as part of the show.
Effie and Drusilla are very different, despite both being involved in the spectacle of the Hunger Games. While Effie seemed to have a good heart underneath her showmanship, Drusilla is truly malicious. She’s focused solely on her own image and maintaining a good reputation with the Capitol.
Why Glenn Close Looks So Different In The Sunrise On The Reaping Trailer
One major reason it’s difficult to picture Glenn Close in this part is her transformation. When Effie Trinket was first introduced in The Hunger Games, she was heavily made up with lots of jewelry and brightly colored clothes, making Elizabeth Banks almost unrecognizable at first. It wasn’t until the later films that she began to look more like herself.
In The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Drusilla is even more ostentatious than Effie Trinket used to be. She exaggerates her appearance with makeup and extravagant clothing, and even has assistants physically help her take the stage to demonstrate her power over her staff. Drusilla is essentially performing a role to climb the social ladder in the Capitol.
Glenn Close is poised to play a compelling villain in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. If her character mirrors the book’s portrayal, she’ll likely be someone who disdains the tributes and seems indifferent to their fate, making her a character audiences will love to hate.
