Recently, Ubisoft announced a major company restructuring, and as part of that, they cancelled the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The decision caused further upset when a former developer, SocramVelmar, revealed the project was nearly complete, leaving the team frustrated with the cancellation.
He explained on Reddit that if the game failed, it would be more damaging to Ubisoft than simply losing money during development. This impacts both the company’s finances and its reputation. Modern gamers expect ongoing support for games after they’re released, so even if the remake of Sands of Time was nearly complete, Ubisoft would still need to invest more money in updates and improvements.
Alleged looks of the Prince of Persia
While the updated game aimed to stay true to the 2003 original, reports indicate several significant changes were made. For instance, SocramVelmar noted the addition of a time-reversal feature that would visibly mark its use.
Okay, so instead of just hitting ‘undo’ when I mess up, the game lets me actually work with my past self for a bit. Like, imagine I’m trying to make a tricky jump. If I fail, I can trigger a ‘ghost’ of my previous attempt to finish that jump while I move on. Or maybe I need to distract a guard – I could let my past self handle that while I sneak past. It’s not about erasing mistakes, it’s about using a short replay of what would have happened to help me progress. It’s a really cool idea!
While it’s unlikely we’ll ever see it, a complete cancellation isn’t certain, as information often surfaces eventually. For instance, yesterday, screenshots reportedly showing a character model from the cancelled Prince of Persia remake appeared online.

Fans haven’t really connected with this character, and some are playfully calling him the “Prince of India.” He’s quite different from the original version, and some people even think he looked better in the much-discussed 2020 trailer.
It looks like he’s about to sing and dance in a Bollywood movie.
It’s surprising to see such a flawed character design, particularly at this late stage in the game’s development. It makes you wonder who signed off on it.
We don’t know if the leaked screenshots are real, so it’s best to view them with skepticism.
