Warning: spoilers for Good Omens season 3.
Okay, so “Good Omens” is wrapping things up with what feels like the ultimate religious event – the Second Coming. It brings the forces of Heaven and Hell back together, but a familiar face is missing – Miranda Richardson’s Shax. After that shocking cliffhanger at the end of season two, Prime Video’s “Good Omens” is back for a final season, but it’s a bit different this time around. Instead of a full season, we get one extended 90-minute episode that brings back the delightful duo of Crowley, played by David Tennant, and Aziraphale, brought to life by Michael Sheen.
Now that Crowley has retired and is living on the streets, Aziraphale has been working on a plan for the Second Coming. However, things get much more difficult when Jesus unexpectedly leaves Heaven. Both Heaven and Hell begin searching for Him, forcing Crowley and Aziraphale to join forces again. Season 3 of Good Omens sees the return of angels and demons, though Shax is notably absent.
The third season of Good Omens shifts its central mystery. Instead of racing to find Jesus, the story now revolves around the vanishing archangels, the stolen Book of Life, and the reasons behind these events. This leads to a surprising reveal, and largely moves the action away from Hell and its demons. However, a significant question lingers: what happened to Shax, particularly after her promotion in Hell during the previous season?
Despite Her New Role In Hell, Shax Doesn’t Appear In Good Omens Season 3
Following the events at the end of season 1, where Crowley was branded a traitor, Shax took his place as Hell’s representative on Earth. She first appeared in season 2, and after discovering that Aziraphale and Crowley were assisting and sheltering the archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm), she sent a demon army to attack Aziraphale’s bookshop. Shax also witnessed the revelation of the relationship between Gabriel and Beelzebub at the close of season 2.
Following Crowley’s advice, Gabriel and Beelzebub decided to live together on Alpha Centauri, which meant they both left their positions in Heaven and Hell. Aziraphale then stepped into Gabriel’s role in Heaven, and Shax took over Beelzebub’s duties in Hell, becoming the new Duke of Hell and a key figure there. This makes Shax’s lack of appearance in season 3 of Good Omens particularly noticeable.
Given that Hell was actively searching for Jesus, it seemed likely Shax would reappear, even for a short time. However, season 3 gave Hell’s tasks to other demons who primarily served as comic relief. Shax isn’t mentioned at all in the new season, which is surprising considering she was a major villain in season 2 and a powerful figure in Hell – especially after Beelzebub’s arrival. This raises questions about where she was during the events of the Second Coming and whether she remained a Duke of Hell, or if her position was reduced.
Good Omens Season 3’s Production Issues Might Have Led To Shax’s Absence
As of today, there’s no official explanation for why Miranda Richardson isn’t appearing in the third season of Good Omens, but many believe it’s connected to the difficulties the show faced during production. Initially, season 3 was intended to have six episodes, but those plans were altered following the accusations of sexual assault against Neil Gaiman.
Neil Gaiman departed the show during emergency meetings with Amazon, and it was later announced that season 3 of Good Omens would consist of a single, 90-minute episode. This meant the story needed to be reworked, and with limited time and a lot of plot to cover, some characters inevitably received less screen time. As a result, Hell and its demons played a smaller role in the season, and bringing Shax back for only a brief appearance wouldn’t have done her justice.
While not flawless, the ending for Crowley and Aziraphale in Good Omens season 3 is satisfying. The show had to make some cuts to fit everything into a finale. And without explanation from the writers or Miranda Richardson, what happened to Shax after season 2 remains unknown.
