Palmerston, the Foreign Office’s beloved cat known for his social media fame and representing British diplomacy, has passed away after a long and distinguished career, including time spent in retirement overseas.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office announced his death on February 16th in a post on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office announced with sadness the passing of Palmerston, their Chief Mouser and beloved former resident of Battersea. He passed away peacefully in his retirement in Bermuda. The department expressed their gratitude and affection for Palmerston, saying farewell from all his friends at the FCDO.
Palmerston, a cat adopted from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in 2016, became well-known at the Foreign Office in London. While technically employed for pest control, he became famous worldwide thanks to his charming personality and frequent appearances with diplomats.
We are very sad to announce the passing of Palmerston, our beloved Chief Mouser and former Battersea resident, who spent his retirement in Bermuda. He was a wonderful feline diplomat and will be greatly missed by all his friends at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. Farewell, Palmerston!

Palmerston was a frequent sight in government buildings, often greeting guests. He became famous for his playful competition with Larry, the cat who lived at 10 Downing Street. Videos of their interactions outside the offices often became popular online, making Palmerston a well-known animal in Britain.
After serving as the Foreign Office’s resident cat for four years, Palmerston retired in 2020 and went to live with a Foreign Office employee. He later moved to Bermuda, where he lived out his remaining years in peaceful retirement.
Even after he retired, Palmerston stayed super popular online – people still loved following his life after his time as a working cat at the Foreign Office. Honestly, he’s become a legend! He’s remembered as the office’s favorite mouser and kind of like their unofficial ambassador, and I think a lot of us gamers who followed him will never forget him.
