The Steam Controller swaps traditional analog sticks for two trackpads, aiming to give players the precision of a mouse when playing PC games. Valve believes this makes it possible to comfortably play genres that usually require a keyboard and mouse, like quick-action shooters.
The controller features advanced magnetic thumbsticks with TMR technology, designed for quicker reactions and lasting durability. They also respond to touch, letting you control the game with movements in addition to the usual buttons and sticks.
Haptic feedback is key, using advanced rumble motors to create detailed sensations during gameplay. These motors can produce complex vibrations for a more immersive experience.

Valve has introduced a new feature that lets players aim by physically moving their controllers, using the device’s built-in motion sensors. This ‘gyro aiming’ can be easily turned on or off and customized to fit each player’s preferences, just like other controls.
The controller features four buttons on the back that can be easily pressed with your fingers, letting you control the game without lifting your thumbs from the trackpads or joysticks.
The Steam button does double duty: it turns the device on and off, and also quickly opens important features like your game library, the Steam store, settings, and game controls. You can also easily get to your notifications, friends list, and Steam Chat from a convenient quick-access menu.
Valve states that the controller works with any device that uses Steam or the Steam Link app, such as computers running Windows, Mac, or Linux, and also with tablets and phones.
As a Steam Deck fan, I’m really excited to hear this controller works seamlessly whether my Deck is docked or in handheld mode – it’s great to have the same control options no matter how I play! Valve also mentioned it connects directly to Steam Machines and can even wake them up remotely, which is a super convenient feature.
