A shortage of RAM is causing problems for many companies. This is affecting game consoles, with some becoming more expensive, and major gaming companies are finding it hard to get the computer parts they need. As a result, Valve is now asking for help from the public to source more RAM.
The growing demand for RAM from artificial intelligence and data centers has created a shortage across many industries. This is causing problems for manufacturers, leading to higher prices for some handheld gaming consoles and possible delays for the launch of new gaming systems.
Like many companies, Valve is facing difficulties securing enough RAM for its upcoming Steam Machine, scheduled for release in 2026. They’re actively seeking sources to purchase the necessary components to meet demand and deliver the console as promised.
Valve begs for help to find and buy RAM
At GDC, Valve indicated they’re actively looking to purchase large quantities of RAM, as highlighted by Hayden Dingman. They essentially stated they’re interested in buying any available RAM in bulk.

While mentioned somewhat jokingly at the event, the situation highlights how much companies are struggling to get enough of this component. Valve securing more RAM will be a huge boost for making the Steam Machine, particularly since they’re now reaching out for help with sourcing it.
Both individuals and businesses are finding it difficult to buy RAM at a fair price. Many people are noticing surprisingly high costs for even basic RAM modules, and companies like Valve are even asking customers to help them find affordable options.
Even though fans are eager for it, Valve has confirmed the Steam Machine is still planned for release in 2026. They did caution that a parts shortage might increase the cost.
