On November 12th, Valve announced three new devices: the Steam Frame, an updated Steam Machine, and a new Steam Controller. This has led fans to speculate about when we might see a new version of the Steam Deck.
The company has reconfirmed plans for a new and improved Steam Deck. However, they’re waiting for more powerful chips that can significantly boost performance without drastically reducing battery life.
Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais recently told IGN that the company will only release a new, more powerful handheld gaming device when the necessary technology is available to make it a significant improvement over the current model. He shared this information during an interview at Valve’s office before the official announcement.
Valve is keeping an eye on the latest advancements in computer chips and designs. However, they haven’t found any current technology that offers the right combination of power and battery life for the next version of the Steam Deck.
Valve says it needs a bigger leap in power before moving forward
“We’re not interested in getting to a point where it’s 20 or 30 or even 50% more performance at the same battery life,” he told the publication.
We’re aiming for a clearer step forward with the next Steam Deck. We’ve been focusing on the latest processor and design improvements to figure out what it should be. However, we haven’t found any existing components that would allow us to create a Steam Deck with a significant performance boost just yet.

The original Steam Deck came out in February 2022, and the OLED version followed in November 2023. As the device nears its four-year anniversary, its older hardware is starting to have trouble running some of the latest PC games, even though it has a large library of games that are confirmed to work well with it.
Valve has discussed a next-generation Steam Deck before. Back in November 2024, they told TopMob that a new version was planned, but they were waiting for improvements in processing power and battery life. Those challenges still exist today.
As a Steam Deck fan, I’m so excited! Valve just announced a bunch of new stuff on November 12th – they’re coming out with the Steam Frame headset, a new Steam Machine, and even an updated Steam Controller. It’s great to see them expanding beyond the Deck and giving us even more options!
