A Customs and Border Protection dog recently became an online sensation after finding 100 hidden pork and chicken sandwiches in a traveler’s bag. The traveler hadn’t declared the sandwiches to customs officials.
On April 16, 2026, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shared a photo on Facebook of one of their canine officers, Merla, a Beagle mix. The photo showed Merla next to a large pile of seized, packaged sandwiches.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection wants to remind travelers that all food items, including meat, must be declared when entering the country. Recently, a CBP K-9 named Merla found 100 pork and chicken sandwiches hidden in someone’s luggage – and those sandwiches had to be thrown away.

The sandwiches seem to be made by Le Pan, a Thai bakery known for selling a lot of its products in convenience stores like 7-Eleven. They’re very affordable, usually costing around 25 baht, which is about 77 cents in US dollars.
Throwing away all those sandwiches may seem extreme, but the agency explains on its website why they take such careful steps with even simple foods.

Why does the CBP destroy undeclared food items?
To safeguard local farming, natural environments, and public health, many countries don’t allow travelers to bring in food without declaring it.
As a big fan of keeping our country healthy and thriving, I was reading up on what you can’t bring into the US, and I learned that certain farm products are banned. Apparently, the Customs and Border Protection website explains that these items can carry harmful bugs and diseases that could really hurt American farming, animals, and the environment. It makes sense – they’re trying to protect everything we grow and raise here!
Any food or plant items travelers don’t declare will be destroyed by agricultural officials when they arrive. First-time offenders with non-commercial items could also face fines up to $1,000.

The penalties for bringing prohibited items on flights increase significantly if travelers are caught with undeclared food, even if they plan to sell it or if it’s been shipped from another country.
Facebook commenters were amused by the situation, with one writing,”Merla said, ‘Not on my watch!’”
“The sandwich must be destroyed. Destroyed by the person who detected it,” another joked.
“I’m surprised that Beagle didn’t eat half of them!” another remarked.
Okay, so you won’t believe this – another dog video is taking over the internet! This one’s about a super cute pup who apparently escaped from home just to go hang out with her boyfriend at doggy daycare. Seriously, it’s adorable and everyone’s losing it!
