TikTok quietly launches PineDrama, a new app built entirely around micro TV shows

TikTok has released a new app called PineDrama, letting users enjoy short stories separate from the main TikTok platform. It’s currently available for both iPhone and Android devices in the United States and Brazil.

I’ve been really into PineDrama lately! It’s all about these super short, one-minute dramas – they’re made for watching on your phone, in that vertical format. What’s cool is that each video isn’t just a random clip; it’s actually part of a bigger, ongoing story. It’s like a really quick, bite-sized series!

You can download and use the app without any cost, and right now it doesn’t have any ads. The developers might add ads in the future, though.

What PineDrama offers

PineDrama lets users find shows and movies in a couple of ways. They can use the Discover tab to browse everything or just see what’s popular, or they can scroll through a personalized feed that learns what they like. The platform offers a variety of genres, including thrillers, romances, and family-friendly shows, with popular options like “Love at First Bite” and “The Officer Fell for Me.”

The app offers standard streaming features like a Watch History and a Favorites section, so you can easily pick up where you left off or save shows you enjoy. You can also comment on episodes and watch in full-screen mode, which hides captions and sidebars for a more immersive experience.

TikTok is expanding its short-form video offerings with PineDrama, a new platform for microdramas. This move comes after TikTok introduced a similar feature, TikTok Minis, last year. Now, TikTok is directly challenging existing microdrama apps like ReelShort and DramaBox.

Short-form video series, known as microdramas, are becoming increasingly popular and are expected to bring in $26 billion each year by 2030, reports Variety. This differs from previous attempts at short-form streaming, like Quibi – a well-funded platform launched in 2020 by Jeffrey Katzenberg that ultimately failed after just six months.
