The next game in The Sims series, currently known as Project Rene, is designed primarily for mobile devices and will focus on letting players connect and play together. Maxis, the game’s developer, wants to clarify that this isn’t The Sims 5, and that it will exist alongside The Sims 4 and any future Sims games that focus on single-player experiences.
In a recent blog post kicking off the new year, EA and Maxis shared updates on the future of The Sims. They announced that “Project Rene” will now concentrate on letting friends create and play together in a shared, multiplayer experience. The team also emphasized that their new mobile game is designed to be a collaborative experience.
The Sims series will continue to focus on what made it popular in the first place: a detailed, single-player experience where you control your Sims’ lives, make meaningful choices, and enjoy a robust simulation. The creators emphasize that this core gameplay will remain central to the franchise.
Project Rene was initially thought to be the next installment in The Sims series, often referred to as The Sims 5. However, EA and Maxis have since clarified that it will work alongside The Sims 4, not replace it. Recently, the team reassured fans that their core values will remain the same, addressing concerns about how EA’s recent $55 billion deal with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund might impact the game.
In 2023, rumors started circulating about Project Rene and its potential for multiplayer features, with games like Animal Crossing and Among Us mentioned as possible influences. Now, it’s confirmed that Project Rene is heavily focused on creating a social multiplayer experience. Beyond the game itself, a movie based on The Sims is also currently in development.
