A new R-rated horror movie, championed by Stephen King’s son, is heading to Netflix, and it could significantly boost the film’s popularity and the entire franchise. Stephen King is, of course, a legendary name in horror, known for his many influential books and the numerous film and TV adaptations they’ve inspired.
Horror fans have a lot to enjoy, as Joe Hill seems to have inherited his father Stephen King’s talent for creating truly memorable and frightening stories. Hill has already proven himself with novels like NOS4A2 and Heart-Shaped Box, and his collections of short stories, 20th Century Ghosts and Strange Weather, have also been well-received.
Hill’s stories have been made into movies, and one will soon be available on Netflix. Its success could lead to more films in the series, depending on how viewers respond.
Black Phone 2 Is Coming To Netflix This May
In May 2026, Netflix will release several highly anticipated films and series, including a sequel to Black Phone.
The follow-up to the 2021 film The Black Phone will continue the story, exploring what happened to Finney Blake after he escaped from his kidnapper, known as The Grabber, with the aid of ghostly voices. While Finney enjoys several years of freedom, the sequel reveals that The Grabber’s influence still lingers and continues to torment him.
Following its initial release in theaters in October 2025, Black Phone 2 will be available on Netflix starting May 16, 2026. This adds another horror film to Netflix’s lineup and gives more people a chance to watch – or re-watch – the movie. The film’s performance on the streaming platform could even determine whether a third Black Phone movie gets made.
Black Phone 2’s Netflix Release Could Help Make Black Phone 3 A Reality
Even before Black Phone 2 came out, people involved with the project said whether it would get a sequel, like Black Phone 3, depended on how well it did in theaters. This was logical, as the movie had already gone beyond the scope of the original short story. However, expanding the story did fit with the author’s earlier thoughts about possibly turning the short story into a full novel.
Although the second movie earned a bit less at the box office than the first, it still exceeded $100 million worldwide (bringing in $132 million, according to Box Office Mojo) and received good reviews. This suggests the series successfully continued, even after moving beyond the original story. However, the slightly lower earnings might make it less likely that another sequel will be made.
This situation also makes the potential performance of Black Phone 2 on Netflix particularly interesting. Many films have become popular again after being added to streaming services like Netflix, and this could give Black Phone 2 a second life – or simply bring it back into public conversation – which might be enough to encourage those involved to consider making another film in the series.
Now that Black Phone 2 will be available on Netflix in three weeks, it’s hard to say how viewers will react and how popular it will become. However, its release on Netflix should give a wider audience the chance to watch the film, conveniently from their homes.
