It’s understandable why Disney wanted to create a character like John Wick, but their new hero might be even more powerful. The original John Wick film, released in 2014, showed Keanu Reeves as a retired hitman forced back into action when ruthless criminals steal his car and kill his dog. Wick demonstrates incredible fighting skills, seeking revenge on those who harm others and defending the helpless – a storyline that shares similarities with Marvel’s Punisher.
Jon Bernthal first appeared as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, in Season 2 of the Daredevil series in 2016. He was portrayed as a relentless vigilante who violently targeted and dismantled criminal organizations in New York City. Driven by the tragic loss of his family, his actions were extreme and effective. The Punisher’s motivations, techniques, abilities, and backstory share strong parallels with John Wick, particularly as seen in The Punisher: One Last Kill.
The Punisher Proves He Is the MCU’s John Wick in One Last Kill
Coming out on May 12, 2026, the new film, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and co-written by Green and Jon Bernthal, picks up with Frank Castle shortly after he finishes his long quest for revenge. Having eliminated the four members of the Gnucci crime family responsible for his family’s deaths, Castle finds himself targeted by the mysterious Ma Gnucci (Judith Light), who is determined to get her own revenge.
I’m a huge fan of both John Wick and The Punisher, and it’s so cool how similar these two stories are! At the end of John Wick: Chapter 2, everyone starts hunting Wick after a bounty is put on his head. It’s the same deal in The Punisher: One Last Kill – Ma Gnucci puts a price on Frank Castle’s head, and suddenly he’s got a ton of criminals trying to take him down. But just like Wick, Frank isn’t going to go down without a fight, and he definitely uses some serious force to make his escape!
Both The Punisher: One Last Kill and John Wick share clear parallels. Both stories center on characters – Frank Castle and John Wick – fueled by deep emotional trauma and a desire for revenge. Wick is pulled back into a life of crime after his wife’s death and a personal attack, while Castle is motivated by the murder of his family. Interestingly, both narratives begin with the death of an innocent dog and ultimately focus on the characters’ pursuit of vengeance.
Frank Castle Is Stronger and More Complex Than John Wick
Both John Wick and Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, are portrayed as larger-than-life characters. While both are incredibly skilled fighters, Frank Castle demonstrates a greater capacity for violence and brutality in The Punisher: One Last Kill than John Wick does. He’s not just a great shot; he’s a more complex and ruthless character overall.
While Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of John Wick is famously reserved and unemotional, Jon Bernthal’s performance as the Punisher is strikingly different. Bernthal doesn’t shy away from showing Frank Castle’s deep pain, which stems from the tragic loss of his family. He brings raw emotion to every scene, from guttural screams to heartbreaking moments at his daughter’s grave. This vulnerability, and Castle’s eventual shift from seeking revenge to protecting others, creates a much more layered and complex character.
Additionally, The Punisher: One Last Kill showcases Frank Castle as a more capable, resilient, and realistically tactical fighter. He possesses extensive weapons knowledge, is adept at improvising with his surroundings, and can withstand incredible punishment – like surviving falls from rooftops or impacts with metal. His intense rage also makes him remarkably powerful.
How The Punisher: One Last Kill Sets Up Frank Castle’s Future as the MCU’s John Wick
Following his roles in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 and The Punisher: One Last Kill, Jon Bernthal is joining a Spider-Man movie. While his previous work was known for intense violence, One Last Kill cleverly prepares audiences for this change. His character, Frank Castle, has moved past seeking revenge and is now focused on protecting people.
In The Punisher: One Last Kill, he made a key decision: instead of pursuing Ma Gnucci, he chose to rescue shopkeeper Dre (Andre Royo), his wife Debbie (Mugga), and their daughter Charli (Mila Jaymes). This act completed his evolution into the heroic Punisher, paving the way for future collaborations with other heroes, such as Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Frank Castle will likely remain a furious figure in the ongoing Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline and beyond, and his history with New York’s criminals will always be a part of his character. However, he now has a chance to use his skills – similar to those seen in John Wick – for good, protecting innocent people. This development promises to make him an even more compelling character, and his future looks promising.
