A24, the studio behind many acclaimed films, seems determined to dominate the day of the Tony Award nominations. They recently purchased the Cherry Lane Theatre and now, with their new film Tony releasing this year, they’ve decided to release the first trailer on the same day as the nominations – aiming for a full-on “Tonypalooza.” While some might see this as overly ambitious, it’s a strategy that could pay off. Interestingly, the Tony trailer introduces a third “Tony” to the mix: Antonio Banderas, who embodies a similar wise, yet flawed, older character he so beautifully portrayed in Pain and Glory.

The new film Tony only offers a glimpse into the life of Anthony Bourdain, and that makes sense given how complex and influential he was. Directed by Matt Johnson and starring Dominic Sessa as the young Bourdain, the movie focuses on a summer he spent in Provincetown when he was 19. It portrays him as a bit of a troublemaker working in a kitchen with Leo Woodall and Stavros Halkias, while Emilia Jones plays a voice of reason urging him to behave. The film shows how, under the guidance of a seasoned chef (played by Antonio Banderas), Bourdain begins to find his footing. Expect plenty of seafood and youthful energy! While biopics can sometimes be predictable, director Matt Johnson’s previous film, Blackberry, was surprisingly engaging, suggesting Tony might be a worthwhile look at the chef’s early life.
Tony will be released in theaters in August.
