The Mandalorian & Grogu’s New Razor Crest Explained (And What Happened To The N-1)

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian & Grogu

A major surprise in The Mandalorian & Grogu is the reappearance of Din Djarin’s ship, the Razor Crest. After his original ship was destroyed by Moff Gideon in season 2 of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin and Grogu had been traveling in a modified N-1 Naboo Starfighter. But there are several good reasons why the Razor Crest has returned to the story.

After the Razor Crest was destroyed, switching to a smaller ship was a logical step. When Din Djarin built his N-1 starfighter on Tatooine (as shown in The Book of Boba Fett), Grogu was already training with Luke Skywalker. At the same time, Din had been moving away from bounty hunting, focusing instead on personal goals – like earning back his clan’s respect and helping Mandalorians reclaim their home, as seen in season 3 of The Mandalorian.

Djarin and Grogu are now working with the New Republic to capture Imperial leaders, and taking them alive is the priority to gather information. The latest season of The Mandalorian & Grogu cleverly addresses the problem of Djarin’s ship. Here’s how he acquires a new Razor Crest and what happens to his N-1 Naboo Starfighter in the new Star Wars story.

The New Republic Gave Din Djarin A Brand-New Razor Crest

At the beginning of the first part of The Mandalorian & Grogu, Din Djarin gets a brand-new ship from the New Republic.

Following a successful mission where Din Djarin defeats Commander Barro, he meets with Colonel Ward (played by Sigourney Weaver) to discuss the details. She pays him for his work and offers him a bonus – a brand new Razor Crest spaceship with yellow highlights – as an advance for a future assignment.

Okay, so the Razor Crest we see in The Book of Boba Fett is a real treat for fans of The Mandalorian. Remember how beat-up Djarin’s ship was by the end of season two? This one is much cleaner – almost brand new. According to production designer Doug Chiang, the backstory is that this is a Razor Crest the New Republic salvaged. They found it in the personal collection of an Imperial officer they captured – apparently, he was a bit of a collector, hoarding pristine, vintage ships. It’s cool to see a version of the ship that hasn’t been through the wars yet.

The explanation for how the Razor Crest was restored is actually quite good. Din Djarin and Grogu accept a new mission: rescuing Jabba the Hutt’s son, Rotta. In return, the Hutt Syndicate will share information about a mysterious Imperial Commander named Coin. They set off on their journey with Zeb Orellios from Star Wars Rebels, who persuaded Djarin to take on the mission and provided the ship.

Why Star Wars Brought Back The Razor Crest For The Mandalorian & Grogu

Narratively, returning the Razor Crest to Din Djarin felt like the correct decision. The ship became truly iconic throughout the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, appearing almost as much as Din Djarin and Grogu themselves as they journeyed across the galaxy.

While the N-1 ship is fun for fans, it’s just too small for the current story. The Mandalorian & Grogu now have adventures that need more space, especially with the introduction of the large character Rotta the Hutt. Plus, Zeb Orrelios is Din Djarin’s new partner, and there’s no way both he, Din, and Grogu could comfortably fit inside the N-1—though the thought is amusing! That’s why the movie started with a Rebel U-Wing instead, providing the necessary room for everyone.

Don’t Worry, The Mandalorian Still Has His Custom N-1 Starfighter

Good news for Star Wars fans! Even with the Razor Crest back in action, The Mandalorian & Grogu reveals that Din Djarin still owns the unique Naboo starfighter he customized during The Book of Boba Fett.

If you look closely during the second half of the show, you can see the N-1 starfighter parked next to the Razor Crest when Din and Grogu return to their home on Nevarro. It’s easily one of the most stylish and speedy ships in all of Star Wars. So, it would have been a real shame if The Mandalorian had just stopped using it after season 3.

Luckily, The Mandalorian & Grogu ensures both the Razor Crest and the N-1 Starfighter will appear in future Star Wars projects. It’s great that Din Djarin now has two fantastic ships – essentially a practical, everyday vehicle and a sleek, high-performance one – which adds a lot of excitement to the story.

The Mandalorian & Grogu is now playing in theaters from Lucasfilm.
