The initial trailer for *The Mandalorian and Grogu* received a varied response from fans. A common question was why Disney chose to make a movie instead of continuing the popular streaming series with a fourth season. This indicates Disney may still be struggling to understand what types of stories and content resonate most with *Star Wars* audiences.
The Mandalorian, the first Star Wars television series, debuted in 2019 and quickly became popular, running for three seasons until April 2023. While creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni had finished writing a fourth season, Lucasfilm decided to shift direction. Instead of continuing the series, they opted to create a new Star Wars movie based on The Mandalorian’s story. This movie, titled The Mandalorian and Grogu, was announced in January 2024 and wrapped up filming in December 2024.
The Mandalorian and Grogu’s story begins with the bounty hunter working for the New Republic. They’re tasked with finding the remaining leaders of the defeated Galactic Empire. While this setup works well for The Mandalorian, many viewers thought it felt more like the premise for an entire season of a Star Wars TV show rather than a single movie.
Star Wars works best as episodic stories
The initial trailer for the upcoming film featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu didn’t change the current feeling about it. The visuals weren’t any more striking than what viewers have already seen in previous seasons, which isn’t surprising considering Lucasfilm’s history of technological innovation. Tools like the StageCraft video wall have already given ‘The Mandalorian’ and other Star Wars series a movie-like quality. However, the trailer doesn’t suggest the film will offer anything beyond seeing these characters on a larger IMAX screen.
Originally, Disney and Lucasfilm intended to release a new Star Wars film every year beginning in 2015. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and problems with film production caused those plans to be delayed. Now, with new projects like *The Mandalorian & Grogu* and *Star Wars: Starfighter* slated for release in 2026 and 2027, it appears Disney and Lucasfilm are attempting to resume that annual release schedule.
This plan overlooks the fact that Star Wars has historically thrived when told in separate stories or seasons. This approach began with the original films, which actually started with Episode 4. After that, the Star Wars universe was largely expanded through individual stories in novels and comics. Currently, the most successful Star Wars content includes animated series and live-action TV shows.
Most people expect *The Mandalorian* movie to be enjoyable, but it’s doubtful it will bring Star Wars fans back to cinemas in large numbers, as Disney is hoping. The story feels like it would have fit better as an extended episode or series of episodes within the existing *Mandalorian* show, rather than a standalone film.
