Fans enjoy following Anakin and Luke’s stories, but many have expressed a desire for fresh perspectives in the future of Star Wars. This isn’t about taking away from these iconic characters or their impact on the galaxy; instead, viewers are hoping to see stories centered around other heroes within this universe. The Mandalorian and Grogu might finally deliver on that hope.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Represents a Dramatic Shift For Star Wars

The story initially moved away from Luke Skywalker because the plot required it – Grogu needed a Jedi Master, and Luke was the only one who fit the bill. This marked the first time Luke wasn’t the main character. Let me be clear, I’m hoping for cameos, of course! But it’s great to see that Luke, Leia, and even characters on the fringes of the Skywalker saga won’t be taking center stage. They’re still part of this world, still fighting the good fight against what’s left of the Empire, which is awesome. However, at its heart, this is Din Djarin and Grogu’s journey, a brand new story and not just another chapter in the Skywalker family’s history. And honestly, that’s exactly what I wanted.

The Skywalker Saga Is and Always Will Be Important to Star Wars

Critics and fans most recently praised the second season of Andor as the best Star Wars project. The story doesn’t focus on the Skywalker family; it’s set during Luke Skywalker’s childhood. However, the events of Andor are hugely important, as they directly impact the Empire’s rise and the Rebellion’s chances of success.

Even Rogue One, while a separate story, still tied into the Skywalker family saga with its final scene featuring Leia. Similarly, The Mandalorian takes place in a universe heavily shaped by events surrounding Anakin and Luke Skywalker. However, the show focuses on characters whose lives aren’t directly connected to the Skywalker name – they’re part of a larger world where the Skywalker story is almost a myth. These characters and their journeys are just as meaningful to the overall narrative and the Star Wars universe as the Skywalker family’s own story.

The new movie seems to be setting up big changes, like Din Djarin, who belongs to a group that never removes their helmets, visibly taking his off in the trailer. Unless the story revisits Mandalore for a special ritual, this suggests a significant shift for his character. Beyond that, the film introduces several new characters – including New Republic pilots led by Colonel Ward, and familiar faces from the Star Wars: Rebels series – who could potentially lead their own stories in the future.

The Future of Star Wars Has to Be Bigger Than Just the Skywalkers

The last film in the Skywalker Saga sees Rey taking on the legacy of the galaxy’s most famous hero. She’s connected to the Skywalker family history, yet also stands apart from it. Like Luke before her, Rey is meant to become a symbol for the galaxy, rather than simply continuing the family conflicts that have driven the story for fifty years. The Skywalker family – Rey, Luke, Anakin, and even Shmi – will always be a part of the Star Wars universe, but the stories themselves need to be about more than just their family drama.

The future of Star Wars is open to big time jumps – the movies could take place years, decades, or even centuries from now. Grogu’s long life uniquely connects him to the events of The Phantom Menace. Even if a new evil arises and the Skywalker name is forgotten, Grogu will remain a link to the original story. His future, and the future of the galaxy, will simply be told through different characters, families, and groups, allowing the Star Wars universe to continue to grow and evolve for at least another 50 years.

Fans of this series might need some time to adjust, much like fans of Star Trek did when it expanded. This isn’t just because the characters are transitioning from television, but also because the definition of what a Star Wars story can be is changing. Star Trek started with the adventures of the Enterprise and grew into something much larger. Star Wars is experiencing a similar shift, and while the Skywalker family will remain significant, they are no longer the central focus of the overall story.
