Even though the show Stranger Things has finished, people are still very interested in Dungeons & Dragons. While Stranger Things offered a glimpse into a D&D game, Prime Video provides a much more detailed look.
Inspired by the popular web series Critical Role, this animated show captures the excitement of Dungeons & Dragons. It started as a fan-funded Kickstarter project and quickly became known as one of the best adaptations of the role-playing game.
The Legend of Vox Machina Earned Its Rotten Tomatoes Score
Critical Role began as a simple web series where voice actors played a Dungeons & Dragons campaign they created themselves. It quickly became popular, leading to an animated series based on their adventures on Prime Video. The show both celebrates the rich history and rules of Dungeons & Dragons and offers a fresh, original story.
Vox Machina is a mismatched group of adventurers, unlike the typical heroes you find in stories like The Lord of the Rings. They’re primarily motivated by money and self-interest, and they work as mercenaries, taking on jobs throughout the world of Exandria. This world, along with many other aspects of the series, was created by Dungeon Master Matt Mercer for the campaign.
The first season has a simple plot: Vox resolves the problems of a town and defeats a blue dragon called Brimscythe. These dragons are a real danger because they can talk and make plans against humans. They’re not just randomly destructive; they’re intelligent and have complex goals.
Beyond its exciting battles with dragons, Vox Machina delves into a rich fantasy world and the lives of its compelling characters. Throughout the series, we learn about each character’s personal struggles, creating a heartwarming story about the bonds of family.
The Legend of Vox Machina Is an Emotional Rollercoaster
I’m completely blown away by Matt Mercer’s world-building skills, and The Legend of Vox Machina really shows it off! He doesn’t just create a fantastic world, but every single character feels so real and interesting. The group itself is incredible – you’ve got these half-elf twins who are rangers, a charming bard, a powerful Goliath, a cool gunslinger, a quirky gnome, and a nature-loving druid. It’s a really diverse and engaging team!
Every character feels real, brought to life by the incredible voice acting. The performances are a major reason the story is so captivating. For example, Laura Bailey, a well-known voice actress from anime and video games, plays Vex’ahlia, a ranger struggling with the pain of past abuse from her father.
Keyleth, Pike, Grog, Scanlan, and Percy, like siblings Vax and Vax’ildan who grew up feeling distant from their father, all have compelling backstories. Vax and Vax’ildan relied on each other, which ultimately led them to become mercenaries. Percy, in particular, is driven by a desire to avenge his family’s murder. Each character’s journey is well-developed and rewarding.
People are initially drawn to Vox Machina for its incredible fantasy world, but they keep watching because of the characters and the powerful emotions the show explores. Though it’s animated, the series doesn’t avoid difficult or heartbreaking moments, tackling themes like love, loss, and betrayal. It’s a critically acclaimed show, boasting a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show’s popularity led to a follow-up series called The Might Nein on Prime Video. It’s expected to continue the story after Vox Machina finishes its planned run in Season 5. You can start watching The Might Nein when it premieres on Prime Video on June 3rd.
