Dark and unsettling stories are incredibly popular right now. We’re seeing this with the success of franchises like The Hunger Games and hit shows such as The Last of Us and Paradise. It’s no surprise, then, that The Testaments, a continuation of the story from The Handmaid’s Tale, is also a streaming favorite.
According to FlixPatrol, the new series quickly became popular on Hulu, landing at No. 5 in the U.S. just one day after its release on April 8th. It’s also doing very well on Disney+ around the world, reaching the top spot in countries including France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and Spain.
What Is The Testaments About?
As a huge fan of The Handmaid’s Tale, I was really excited to read The Testaments, the novel it continues from. It’s told from the viewpoints of three different women – Aunt Lydia, who we already know, and two new characters, Agnes Jemima and Daisy. The story jumps between their experiences, giving you a really interesting look at Gilead from multiple angles.
Ann Dowd, who previously won an Emmy Award for her supporting role in a drama series, is reprising her character in The Testaments. Joining her are Chase Infiniti as Agnes MacKenzie (based on the character Agnes Jemima) and Lucy Halliday as Daisy.
The Testaments is a story about growing up in a frightening future. The show focuses on Agnes as she navigates life in the oppressive society of Gilead and learns about its hidden dangers. We also follow Daisy, a Canadian teen who uncovers a shocking connection to Gilead. The series will have ten episodes.
The Testaments Already Won Over Critics
The series The Testaments premiered on April 8, 2026, with the first three episodes available immediately. New episodes will be released weekly on Wednesdays, and early reviews suggest the show is already a hit with both critics and audiences.
Rotten Tomatoes reports a critics’ score and an 82% audience approval rating. Lacy Baugher of RogerEbert.com praised the film as a warning about the dangers of staying silent or indifferent, a celebration of friendship, and a hopeful message about the potential of young women to make a difference.
The IMDb rating for The Testaments is a strong 7.9. With more episodes on the way, the show has the potential to become a major hit and one of the best series of 2026, building on the success of the original. Overall, The Testaments is highly recommended viewing.
The Testaments is available to stream on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
