Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Boys season 5, episode 4, “King of Hell.”
Even though The Boys is a hugely popular superhero show, it doesn’t rely heavily on massive, over-the-top fight sequences. While episodes like “Herogasm,” “What I Know,” and “The Instant White-Hot Wild” featured impressive battles, the show’s most compelling conflicts usually center on intense conversations and dramatic tension, rather than pure action.
As the danger increases and lives are at risk, it’s clear some characters are headed for conflict this season. In the third episode of The Boys season 5, Homelander almost killed Ryan, and a major showdown between Homelander and Butcher is definitely coming before the series ends.
After five seasons of constant arguing, The Boys finally turned on each other. While the group has had disagreements and tense moments before – like when Butcher shot Starlight early on – the episode “King of Hell” marked a turning point where their frustrations boiled over into an all-out fight.
When The Boys arrived at Fort Harmony while looking for V-One, they immediately started fighting amongst themselves more than usual. Frenchie noticed the fort seemed to be making everyone angrier, but his past drug use somehow protected him from this effect. Despite this, the tension quickly escalated until everyone was at each other’s throats.
The search for V-One quickly became secondary when Butcher, MM, Hughie, and Kimiko all unexpectedly shared their honest feelings, leading to complete pandemonium. The resulting confrontation wasn’t just a verbal argument – it quickly escalated into a full-blown fight that fans had been waiting for throughout the entire series.
The Boys Finally Fighting Each Other Has Been A Long Time Coming
It’s not surprising to see these long-time allies turning on each other. In fact, the bigger shock is that it took so long. Throughout the series, The Boys has consistently shown the group struggling with internal conflict and disagreements, which eventually led to a major falling out.
Disagreements have often escalated into serious problems, even leading to outright betrayal. While Butcher is frequently involved in these conflicts, it’s clear there’s widespread tension within the group – Hughie and MM recently got into a physical fight, and Kimiko surprisingly argued with Frenchie, despite being in a relationship with him.
Watching them all go at it was insane! It started with MM and Butcher against Hughie and Kimiko, but quickly spiraled into total chaos. Honestly, knowing how this whole group was built on secrets and everyone just trying to get revenge, it wasn’t that surprising to see them turn on each other. I really thought someone was going to get seriously hurt – with Butcher and Kimiko’s abilities, it’s a wonder everyone walked away from that fight!
It’s been fascinating to watch Butcher change throughout The Boys. He’s always had a real disdain for Supes, which has made his connections with Starlight and Kimiko so interesting, but also really messy. And remember in season one how Frenchie and MM just couldn’t stand working together? They had so much history, Butcher really had to push them to rebuild The Boys. It’s amazing how much those dynamics have evolved!
Given their complicated history and differing beliefs, a conflict between these characters felt inevitable. Surprisingly, this struggle didn’t destroy their relationships; it seems to have actually been beneficial, judging by how the episode ended.
The Fort Harmony Trip Is Like A Big Therapy Session For The Boys
The plan to prevent Homelander from achieving immortality unexpectedly became a group therapy session for The Boys at Fort Harmony. Everyone had a chance to be honest with each other, sharing difficult truths. Although Starlight wasn’t there and Frenchie didn’t participate much, the rest of the team confronted each other about their feelings.
The group isn’t exactly known for keeping their feelings to themselves – they often argue. But the time spent in Fort Harmony, despite the intense arguments and even physical fights, likely helped them resolve things and move forward.
After their argument, MM and Butcher clarified they were serious about what they said, but weren’t actually angry with each other. At the same time, Kimiko apologized to Frenchie and they had a heartfelt talk about where things stood between them. Back with the team, Starlight returned and shared a warm embrace with Hughie, having recently gone through therapy herself.
I don’t think everything’s suddenly sunshine and roses with The Boys after everything that’s happened, and honestly, it would be pretty unrealistic to expect that. Characters like Kimiko and Mother’s Milk have changed so much in season 5, they’re really different people than we first met! But, it feels like some of the biggest issues between them are finally starting to fade, which is a relief. It’s like they can finally start moving forward, even if things aren’t perfect.
For now, the group appears to be working well together, and their recent trip to Fort Harmony might give them a fighting chance to defeat Homelander in season 5 of The Boys, assuming they can develop a solid strategy. Even if challenges arise later, their current unity is a positive step.
