The Best James Bond PC video games and mods that improve them

As a big Bond fan, it’s always bummed me out that for years, PC gamers were left out in the cold. So many classic titles – like GoldenEye 007, The World Is Not Enough, Agent Under Fire, Everything or Nothing, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, and From Russia with Love – never made it to computers. But the good news is there are still a bunch of Bond games you can play on PC! And what’s even cooler is that a lot of them have been improved by fans with mods and tools, making them feel much more modern.

As a big 007 fan, it’s really frustrating that you can’t buy any Bond games digitally right now. Apparently, the companies that made them only had temporary permission to use the Bond license, so once that ran out, they had to stop selling the games. Luckily, if you’re willing to hunt around, you can still find used copies – it just takes a little effort!

James Bond 007: The Stealth Affair / Operation Stealth – Bond in the point’n’click edition

Let’s begin with Operation Stealth, a well-known adventure game made by Delphine Software, the team behind Flashback. Interestingly, the game was originally developed without official permission to use the James Bond name. However, it was so clearly inspired by Ian Fleming’s Bond novels that the American publisher, Interplay, later secured the rights, and the game was released in the U.S. as James Bond 007: The Stealth Affair.

The American release of the game differs slightly from the European version, changing the hero’s name (from John Glames) and a few minor details. However, the core gameplay remains the same. These changes do create some inconsistencies – like why James Bond would take orders from the CIA – but overall, it’s a fun and engaging spy adventure that fans of the genre will likely enjoy.

This game was originally made for DOS, so playing it now requires a program like DOSBox. However, we recommend using ScummVM instead – it’s simpler and includes helpful extras like graphics filters.

James Bond 007: NightFire – Half-Life heritage

James Bond 007: NightFire is a rare case – it’s a PC game with the same name as its console counterparts, but it’s actually a completely separate experience.

The PC version of NighFire isn’t a simple copy of the console game; it was developed by a different team at Gearbox. When it was first released in 2002, many gaming magazines thought the PC version was noticeably worse than the console one, and for good reason – it had less polished graphics, a shorter storyline, and fewer gameplay options. However, over time, the difference between the two versions has become less obvious. This is because game development for consoles was very different 19 years ago, and many of the techniques used back then don’t feel as unique or impressive today.

I’m a big fan of James Bond 007: NightFire on PC! It’s a really fun shooter, and it actually runs on the same engine as Half-Life, which is cool. But honestly, you need to get the Unofficial Patch. It’s a game-changer! It makes the game work with modern computers, lets you play in widescreen, fixes a ton of annoying bugs, and even improves how the game looks with things like dynamic lighting. The best part? It brought back online multiplayer, and unbelievably, the servers are still up! There’s usually at least one server where you can find a good match.

007 Quantum of Solace – Call of Duty in a tailcoat

Many fans consider Quantum of Solace to be one of the weaker James Bond films starring Daniel Craig. However, the video game that came out at the same time was surprisingly good. Developed by Treyarch using the Call of Duty game engine, it featured impressive graphics and exciting shooting action.

Honestly, the PC port of this game feels pretty rough, which is weird considering the same team made Call of Duty: World at War the same year and it ran great. Luckily, there’s this awesome fan-made tool called Quantum of Solace Tool that fixes a lot of it. It lets you change the framerate – it’s locked at 30fps by default, and getting it up to 60fps is a huge improvement. You can also tweak the field of view. And thank goodness you can disable that frustrating mini-game! It seems to be tied to the framerate, so once you unlock it and go above 30fps, it becomes basically unplayable if you don’t turn it off.

If the game crashes during the second mission, you can fix it by creating a local Games for Windows Live profile. The standard profiles are online, but that service is no longer working, causing the crashes.

As a big fan, I have to mention Plutonium! It’s an amazing mod that actually gets multiplayer working again, and it doesn’t just bring it back – it improves it too. It really breathes new life into the game.

James Bond 007: Blood Stone

Unlike many James Bond games for computers, Blood Stone is played from a third-person perspective. It’s a well-made shooter with diverse levels and exciting car sequences – it was created by Bizarre Creations, the team behind the popular Project Gotham Racing series. A strong story adds to the experience. This game was designed as an original, interactive movie, offering a fresh approach compared to games based on existing films.

The PC version of James Bond 007: Blood Stone still performs well today, achieving a smooth 60 frames per second. Importantly, the game doesn’t require any modifications to run properly and also supports ultra-wide monitors.

Some players experience stuttering animations in Blood Stone on certain computers, but this is usually fixable. The stuttering isn’t related to your computer’s hardware, and you’ll notice it even when nothing much is happening in the game. If this occurs, quickly minimize the game using ALT+TAB and open the Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL). Go to the ‘Details’ tab, right-click on ‘Bond.exe’, and select ‘Set affinity’. Uncheck ‘Processor 0’ and leave all other processors checked. This should fix the stuttering, though you’ll need to repeat these steps each time you start the game.

007 Legends – the last official Bond on PC

007 Legends is the newest officially released James Bond game. Though it came out nine years ago, the gameplay still holds up well. However, it suffers from two major issues.

Graphics

As a fan, I’ve heard the team is running into some issues with different screen sizes, especially those super-wide ones. It’s not a total roadblock though, they’re working on it! From what I understand, there are basically two ways they’re trying to handle it.

Flawless Widescreen

One way to fix this involves using Flawless Widescreen. It doesn’t automatically work with 007 Legends, but a fan created a script to add support for it. This Flawless Widescreen method should work with all versions of the game.

Cheat Engine

So, I found another way to do this, but it’s a bit different. It only works if you have the actual physical game, not a digital download. You need to download a program called Cheat Engine, and then find a specific script to make it all work. It’s a little more involved than the other method, but it gets the job done if you’ve got a physical copy.

No matter how you try to improve things, the game will still run at 720p. There isn’t a solution to this issue currently. You can attempt to adjust your graphics card settings to make the image appear sharper, but it won’t significantly change the resolution.

Controls

Another issue is the controls. The game doesn’t work well with gamepads, even though it feels like it was designed for them, causing the mouse to move in a choppy way. While this can’t be completely fixed, you can reduce the problem. Try setting the mouse sensitivity to its lowest setting within the game, then increasing it in your Windows settings. You’ll need to play around with the settings to find what feels most comfortable for you.

Fans of the brand should also check out the three unofficial projects.

GoldenEye: Source

GoldenEye: Source is a free game created using the same engine as Half-Life 2. While technically a modification, it doesn’t borrow any content from other games, and Valve permits these types of extensive modifications to be released as separate games. To play, you simply need to install the free Source SDK Base 2007 package through Steam.

This project focuses entirely on multiplayer gameplay and is exceptionally well-made. The developers carefully preserved the fun elements of the original Nintendo 64 multiplayer experience while also adding significant improvements to create a more contemporary feel.

The game isn’t as popular as it once was, so you might need to be patient when trying to play online. It’s much more fun with friends, though! GoldenEye: Source is a really special game, and there aren’t many others like it on PC.

GoldenEye Doom2

A fun project to check out is a complete overhaul of Doom II. The creator has replaced everything, turning it into a brand-new game. It’s a straightforward but really enjoyable shooter that features single-player levels inspired by the original Nintendo 64 games. Expect fast-paced, chaotic gameplay – it’s a classic, no-frills first-person shooter with no stealth or complicated objectives.

Maps from GoldenEye 007 in Far Cry 5

A new fan project has rebuilt the maps from the single-player campaign of the classic game GoldenEye 007 within Far Cry Arcade. While Far Cry 5 plays a little differently, its strong stealth and action-packed combat actually make these iconic levels feel great in the new game.

After MGM’s legal team got involved, the project was quickly taken down. However, the creators were able to revise it, eliminating any specific connections to the James Bond franchise.

You can locate the maps within Far Cry Arcade by searching for the username Perfect-Dark1982. On computers, you can also find them by searching for the map’s title, “Golden Cry.”
