Taylor Sheridan’s expanding Yellowstone universe has found a way to fill the void left by a deceased Dutton brother. Country artist Riley Green joins the story as a character named Garrett, nicknamed “Double G,” in the eighth episode of Marshals. Though the original Yellowstone series starring Kevin Costner concluded with its fifth season, the saga will continue in both Marshals and Dutton Ranch, both set to debut in spring 2026.
As a big fan of the Yellowstone universe, I was excited to see Luke Grimes back as Kayce Dutton in Marshals, the new CBS procedural. I’ll admit, the move from a drama to a crime procedural felt a little different, and I know some fans weren’t thrilled. But honestly, Marshals is a huge hit! It’s currently the most-watched show on TV, pulling in a massive 26.5 million viewers since it premiered on March 1st.
Marshals Episode 8 Replaces Kayce Dutton’s Brothers With Garrett
In the eighth episode of Marshals, Kayce Dutton learns he has a brother named Garrett, who is being introduced to the world of Yellowstone. Garrett used to serve with Kayce in the Navy SEALs. They were part of a four-person team led by Pete “Cal” Calvin, a US Marshal, and included another member known as “Roner,” who apparently died while on a mission under Cal’s command.
Garrett and Cal are increasingly at odds because of past conflicts. Cal was responsible for Garrett being removed from the teams, and although Garrett wants to reconcile, Cal isn’t willing to forgive him. Kayce appears to support Garrett, confronting Cal about his behavior and reminding him that Garrett is family.
Cal remains unchanged, but in the final moments of “Blowback,” Kayce offers Garrett a place to stay for as long as he needs while he figures out his next steps. Garrett reveals he’s been working as a country singer, though he’s still dealing with difficult memories from his time in the military.
Garrett subtly reveals he’s still dealing with past pain, admitting he’s a complex person. Kayce, who understands personal struggles himself, offers Garrett a place on his ranch, telling him that even though their professional lives have diverged, they’ll always be family. This touching moment suggests a strong, new bond is forming between them, helping Kayce feel more complete after the events surrounding Yellowstone.
Kayce Lost His Brothers Fighting For John Dutton’s Ranch
Viewers of Yellowstone are responding positively to Garrett, seeing him as more than just another face on the show. As a former Navy SEAL, he provides Kayce with a much-needed sense of camaraderie, especially after Kayce lost his brothers. This loss includes his biological brother, Lee Dutton, who died during the escalating conflict between John Dutton and the Broken Rock Tribe.
Garrett’s arrival helps fill the emptiness created by previous events, a point emphasized by the ending of Yellowstone. Throughout Season 5, Kayce and Jamie Dutton were rivals in the struggle for the ranch, and it clearly affected Kayce when his sister, Beth Dutton, killed Jamie because of what he did to their father.
Providing Kayce with a supportive male role model is a positive step in Marshals, both for Dutton, who gains valuable assistance, and for someone Kayce can connect with. It remains to be seen how Garrett’s character will develop as the CBS spinoff nears its conclusion, but it promises to be interesting.
It’s still unknown what the future holds for Kayce’s team on Marshals, but a recent leaked photo from Episode 9, “In Low Places” (airing April 26th), shows Garrett wearing a US Marshals vest with Kayce. This suggests Garrett and Cal might start working well together. Alternatively, the show could be preparing to write out Pete due to his health issues.
