The Devil Wears Prada 2‘s Sydney Sweeney mystery has finally been answered.
During filming of the highly anticipated sequel in New York City, photos surfaced online, including one of a person in a hoodie believed to be Sydney Sweeney. This sparked rumors that Sweeney has joined the cast of The Devil Wears Prada 2, along with Justin Theroux, Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, B.J. Novak, and Lady Gaga. None of these actors appeared in the first Devil Wears Prada movie.
So, I was reading ScreenRant’s interview with Liam Crowley about the upcoming Devil Wears Prada 2, and they asked about Sydney Sweeney. Apparently, there were rumors she was on set, and everyone wanted to know if she actually made it into the movie. The writer, Aline Brosh McKenna, confirmed that Sweeney didn’t end up in the final cut, but she stayed pretty tight-lipped about whether she’d even been considered for a part originally. Here’s what McKenna had to say about it all…
I’m based in New York and often see film sets. I think I spotted Sydney Sweeney while you were filming, but I could be wrong.
Aline Brosh McKenna described how photos from the set started circulating, leading to a fun online game where people would post about spotting different actors. It quickly became a running joke about who was in the movie. She realized this meant the project was gaining attention – first through serious speculation, and then just playful excitement.
ScreenRant: So can I ask, was Sydney originally in this film?
Aline Brosh McKenna: Well, you saw the movie. She’s not in the movie.
ScreenRant: She’s not in the final cut.
Aline Brosh McKenna: Yes.
ScreenRant asked if the character was originally intended for a potential third movie.
Aline Brosh McKenna said she wasn’t sure, but she’d happily work with this cast on any project – she’d make a hundred movies with them if she could.
David Frankel: We’re not getting ahead of ourselves here.
Aline Brosh McKenna is open to directing any kind of film, but she’d especially love to tackle a James Bond or other action movie. She’s willing to work on whatever project comes her way.
It’s now confirmed that Sydney Sweeney won’t be appearing in The Devil Wears Prada 2, not even in a quick appearance. This matches what co-star Christy said in a ScreenRant interview when she denied being on set with Sweeney. However, the possibility remains that Sweeney was considered for the film at one point, or could be in a potential third movie. Right now, those involved – including director David Frankel – are focused on releasing the current sequel and aren’t thinking about expanding the series into a trilogy.
Even though Ryan Reynolds isn’t returning, the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada still boasts a fantastic cast. Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt are all reprising their roles as Andy, Miranda, Nigel, and Emily, respectively. Joining them are Justin Theroux, Kenneth Branagh, Ashley Park, Liu Yifei, Haley Lu Richardson, and Lady Gaga. The story follows Andy as she returns to Runway magazine to help Miranda navigate a challenge from Emily, all set against the backdrop of the changing fashion and media landscape.
Experts predict The Devil Wears Prada 2 will earn around $66 million in its first three days in theaters in the US. This is more than double the $27.5 million the original film made during its opening weekend. Despite some questions about whether Sweeney will return for future installments, lots of behind-the-scenes photos and high expectations suggest strong public interest in the sequel. If the film performs well, it could pave the way for a third movie, depending on whether the director, writers, and stars like Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep are interested in making one.
Although Sydney Sweeney wasn’t in a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, she’s been busy with other projects. She returned as Cassie Howard for the third season of HBO’s Euphoria, which is currently being released, and starred as Millie in The Housemaid, a popular movie that’s now available to stream on Starz. She’s also reprising her role as Millie in the upcoming sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, will appear in the live-action Gundam movie on Netflix, and is playing Undine Spragg in a film based on Edith Wharton’s novel, The Custom of the Country.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 releases in theaters on May 1.
