The surprise hit social game, Pokémon Pokopia, developed by Game Freak and Omega Force, is still attracting thousands of new players after just over a month. Players begin a delightful adventure as a human-like Ditto in what’s become the highest-rated Pokémon game to date.
Pokopia is a charming game that successfully combines elements of Minecraft, Animal Crossing, and Pokémon, and is rated E for everyone. However, some parts of the game can be tricky, potentially stopping players from continuing the story or exploring the world.
In the game Pokopia, one of the trickiest challenges is a quest called “Brighten Things Up!”. Players need to find a way to bring sunshine to the gloomy Bleak Beach and wake up a sleeping Snorlax covered in moss, nicknamed Mosslax.
How to Access and Prepare for Brighten Things Up
When players first arrive at Bleak Beach, they’ll start by helping the local Pokémon – like Meowth, Piplup, Torchic, and Trubbish – tidy up their surroundings and improve their homes.
While exploring Bleak Beach, players will come across many utility poles. Collecting all of them is important, as they’re needed to complete the ‘Brighten Things Up!’ quest.
Once you’ve improved the environment around Bleak Beach by assisting the Pokémon there, Trubbish will guide you to a walled-off section near the lighthouse. Investigating the strange sounds you hear will reveal they’re just coming from a sleeping Snorlax.
Professor Tangrowth and Meowth propose using Ditto’s abilities to cheer up the town, hoping to rouse Mosslax and gain clues about the disappeared people, which officially starts the ‘Brighten Things Up!’ task.
To get started, the first step is to gather and build utility poles. These poles can link to local energy sources like windmills, waterwheels, and furnaces, which would then provide power to streetlights and other lights in the area.
Utility poles are built using materials like iron and stone. While Pokémon with electric powers, such as Mareep, can briefly turn on streetlights, the lights need a continuous energy source – like those poles – to stay lit for any length of time.
Torchic recommends building many fires – like campfires, bonfires, and using torches – and creating warm habitats to help Mosslax’s flowers bloom.
How to Light Up Bleak Beach
While small fires and streetlights offer some light at Bleak Beach, players need to use windmills, waterwheels, and furnaces to activate special structures and machines if they want to fully awaken Mosslax.
Just west of the Pokémon Center, you’ll discover a furnace. You can get it working by adding organic items like berries, sticks, or honey.
Close to Mosslax’s cave, there’s a waterwheel that can be used to turn on the lighthouse spotlights. Players can do this by connecting the waterwheel to the lighthouse with utility poles.
You can also find windmills close to the lighthouse and furnace. These windmills can generate power for other machines – just connect them using utility poles, for example, to vending machines.
After connecting the furnace and coastal windmill to the utility poles, guide those poles to the charging station close to Mosslax’s cave.
Five lights on the back of the charging station show if it has power. When all five lights are on, the station is ready and players can start the task.
Waking Up Mosslax
Once Mosslax reaches 80 bloom points, players simply need to speak with Torchic and Professor Tangroweth. They will then be tasked with finding Peakychu, a faint, pale Pikachu located on a small island close to the furnace.

Following Peakychu’s advice, once you’ve put shell lamps inside Mosslax’s cave, Peakychu will ask you to connect the windmills to the charging station – something you should have completed earlier in the game.
Peakychu will gather electricity from the power station and use a bright flash to illuminate the town. This will cause all three of Mosslax’s flowers to bloom. Suddenly, a powerful thunderbolt will strike, opening the entrance to Mosslax’s cave and waking the Pokémon up.
After that, you’ll meet Raikou, a famous Electric-type Pokémon from the Gold and Silver games. He explains that he created the strong lightning strike and believes people abandoned Bleak Beach because of repeated natural disasters.
Once Raikou was gone, Ditto, Peakychu, and Professor Tangrowth were able to talk to Mosslax about the humans. Mosslax explained that humans used to feed it, but when they suddenly disappeared, it fought another Pokémon and fell into a very deep sleep.
Once players finish the “Brighten Things Up!” quest, they can move on to the Sparkling Skylands. However, they also need to have completed the “Time to Party!” quest in the Rocky Ridges first.
