Recently, there’s been a lot of discussion about whether Superman could beat Homelander in a fight. Fans of both DC Comics and The Boys were excited when it was announced that this battle would officially happen in the comic book DC K.O.: Boss Battle #1. However, the fight – and the other battles in the issue – turned out to be a letdown.
For those just catching up with the DC K.O. event: Darkseid, a powerful cosmic villain, has returned and is traveling through time to reach Earth. The DC Universe’s only chance seems to be finding someone who can connect with the Omega Force – the very power that created Darkseid. But to claim this power, they must win a cosmic tournament, proving themselves through battle.
The story of ‘Boss Battle’ begins with just four competitors remaining in the tournament: Superman, Wonder Woman, The Joker, and Lex Luthor. They’re greeted by a powerful cosmic being named the World Forger, who’s worried they might not be strong enough for what’s coming next.
World Forger brings together heroes from different universes to create more battles, hoping to harness the energy from these fights. He even temporarily revives some defeated fighters to help. Ultimately, this complex setup is just a way to explain why so many characters from different franchises – those DC Comics had the rights to – are battling each other. However, the idea is much more interesting than the actual results.
DC K.O.: Boss Battle has no point or purpose
Jeremy Adams skillfully brings the characters to life, which is especially noteworthy considering how many there are and how different they all are. However, this only makes the weak and illogical plot stand out even more.
Most conflicts in these stories are short, lasting only a couple of pages, and rarely have a clear winner. Even the highly anticipated fight between Superman and Homelander was brief – just two pages of action after a two-page standoff where they simply stared each other down.
There’s potential for some really interesting, longer team-ups. I’d especially enjoy a comic featuring Wonder Woman and Red Sonja interacting, building on what we’ve seen. However, the current story relies on too much pointless fighting that doesn’t really fit.
It’s funny to imagine the Joker hosting a tea party with the haunted doll Annabelle, or Lex Luthor getting attacked by Samantha Strong from the creepy forest. Even characters like Star Sapphire and Sabrina the Teenage Witch look like they’re wondering what’s going on.
The artwork is the only truly good part of this, creating a serious tone that the story itself fails to achieve. If you’ve been following the DC K.O. event, you won’t miss anything by skipping this. And if you were hoping for fun action or to see how Superman would fare against Homelander, you’ll be let down.
Grade: 4/10
