Superman has appeared in countless forms, from his early days in Smallville to the more modern Man of Steel and Prime iterations, including both young and adult versions. He’s even shown up causing trouble in the Absolute universe. Most versions of the character would rather avoid fighting Shazam, as his magical abilities pose one of the few real threats to the Son of Krypton.
This time, things are looking up for Clark Kent: he’s teaming up with Shazam, and thankfully, they’re on the same side—which isn’t always the case. In the new series, *Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum*, from the creators of *Ice Cream Man*, it’s revealed that Shazam helped Superman deal with the challenges he faced when he was first exposed to Kryptonite.
This DC Black Label comic, created by W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, and Chris O’Halloran, features Batman and Kent on a terrifying journey into outer space. They’re searching for every type of Kryptonite, and with a 17+ rating, the series promises to be intense and shocking, even though it’s a limited run.
In a recent announcement, writer Tom Prince explained that their work is known for pushing boundaries in comic book storytelling. The five-issue series, *Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum*, will continue this tradition, offering a unique and unusual Superman story that feels both innovative and classic, while remaining relatable and realistic.
Prince then upped the stakes, pointing out to Superman fans that while they’re familiar with Green, Red, and Black Kryptonite, there are actually many other types – like Purple, Cobalt, and Speckled – that could also affect him.
Superman’s Kryptonite Obsession Has Costs
This isn’t the first time Shazam has rescued Superman from a difficult situation, and it likely won’t be the last. However, the creative team behind *Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum* promises a uniquely intriguing and unfiltered horror experience. Audiences are particularly eager to discover what Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent uncover, and to see exactly what happens when they do, presented with striking detail.
According to DC group editor Paul Kaminski, this series will showcase the talented team behind *Ice Cream Man* within the DC Universe, using different storytelling approaches for each issue. Expect stories that are twisted, unsettling, and sometimes frightening, all inspired by the classic style of older *Superman* comics.
Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum was first released in August 2025 and can be found in print or digitally on DC.com (through DC Infinite).
