Super Mario Bros. Movie Storyboards Reveal Which Character Was Cut

Both The Super Mario Bros. Movie and its sequel feature many characters fans know and love, but one popular choice was left out. This might be a letdown for dedicated Nintendo players, particularly those with fond memories of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

Storyboards from the making of The Super Mario Bros. Movie recently surfaced online, showing some characters that were originally planned to appear at Peach and Bowser’s wedding but didn’t make the final cut. These included Wart, Mouser, and Birdo, who have since appeared in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Rawk Hawk, a popular character who first appeared in the 2004 GameCube game of the same name, later remade for the Nintendo Switch in 2024.

Rawk Hawk Misses Out on a Big Screen Cameo

Rawk Hawk, known as “The Feral Nuclear Reactor,” is the main star and current champion of the Glitz Pit – a fighting arena in The Thousand Year Door that’s similar to WWE. He’s clearly based on wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, and Nintendo brought him back for appearances in other games, including Super Paper Mario.

Fans were excited about the possibility of seeing a 3D version of the Paper Mario character in the new Mario movie, which would have also been a nod to the Paper Mario games. Unfortunately, that cameo didn’t happen. GameXplain recently shared a video discussing storyboards from the movie, revealing other cut or changed scenes from the wedding sequence and showing how it differed from the final version.

Storyboards Reveal Other Cut Moments

There’s a brief, unacknowledged interaction between Peach and Toad right before Toad gives Peach an Ice Flower, which she uses to escape her forced marriage. They pretend to argue; Peach complains that her kingdom’s people are weak, implying that’s why she has to marry Bowser. Toad playfully insults her, calling her “rotten.” After Bowser is frozen, Toad jokes that Peach simply “got cold feet.”

With the huge success of both Super Mario movies – the first earning over $1.3 billion in 2023 and the sequel already surpassing $751 million – it’s probable we’ll see more films featuring surprise appearances from lesser-known characters. This opens the door for the potential debut of Rawk Hawk on the big screen.

You can now watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie on Peacock, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is currently showing in cinemas.
