Big, funny movies aren’t as popular with studios these days, which mostly focus on huge action films and awards contenders. So, let’s remember a golden age for comedy: the 1980s. Hollywood seemed to have a particularly playful vibe back then, and it resulted in some truly classic comedies.
Great ’80s comedies are all over the map – some are sophisticated, while others are deliberately silly. They range from fantastical stories to relatable slice-of-life scenarios. But no matter the style, they’re all consistently funny and remain beloved classics today.
9 to 5 Is a Live-Action Cartoon in the Best Way
Live-action movies often struggle with over-the-top humor, making it feel unnatural. However, 9 to 5 is unique because it begins with a subtle approach, but as the story progresses—centering on three office workers fed up with their sexist boss and their eventual kidnapping of him—it embraces a more cartoonish style. This gradual shift is what sets it apart.
Even after all this time, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton are still considered one of the best comedic groups in movie history. It’s too bad they didn’t star in more films together. Though Dolly Parton’s song “9 to 5” is more famous, the movie itself is a fantastic comedy that cleverly addresses issues like sexism and the challenges of working life without being overly serious or lecturing the audience.
The Princess Bride Proves You Don’t Need Disney to Make a Good Princess Movie
Princess Buttercup falls in love with a farmhand, but she’s promised to the villainous Prince Humperdinck. Fortunately, she’s kidnapped just before their wedding! The movie that follows is a special blend of romance, humor, and both realistic and fantastical elements. It appears simple on the surface, but it’s remarkably well-made – far better than many other fantasy films.
Though The Princess Bride is fundamentally a fairy tale, its humor is what truly makes it memorable. People tend to remember the funny parts of the movie more than anything else. With so many fairy tales being remade in Hollywood these days, let’s hope they leave this beloved classic untouched.
When Harry Met Sally Is More Than That One Gag
Today, the movie is best remembered for the iconic line, “I’ll have what she’s having.” While it’s one of the most hilarious moments in film, When Harry Met Sally is much more than just that one joke. It’s a clever take on relationships between men and women, and many consider it superior to other films by Woody Allen. It also launched Meg Ryan’s career, making her a star in romantic comedies.
This movie explores a classic question: is it possible for men and women to have a purely platonic friendship? The answer it gives might not be what you expect, but the film takes a delightful journey to reach that conclusion. Throughout her career, writer Nora Ephron tried to recreate the special charm of this movie in films like Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, but she never quite succeeded.
Even if You Don’t Enjoy Sports, Bull Durham Will Make You Care About Baseball
While sports aren’t for everyone, most people appreciate a great performance by Susan Sarandon. One of her lesser-known but captivating roles is in a film where she plays Annie Savoy, a woman who purposefully starts relationships with baseball players each season, hoping to help them succeed. The story centers around a love triangle involving Annie and two players with very different personalities.
Even if you’re not a sports fan, you might still enjoy Bull Durham. The movie blends baseball into the story so seamlessly that the games become less about the sport and more about the people playing. If you liked the energy of Uncut Gems, you’ll probably appreciate this film’s similar combination of humor, romance, and sports action.
The Naked Gun Is the Movie Leslie Nielsen Was Born to Make
Leslie Nielsen was known for playing dramatic roles throughout much of his career, including in films like The Poseidon Adventure. But everything changed when he appeared in Airplane!, a small part that unexpectedly made audiences laugh hysterically. After that, people wanted to see him in comedies. He became especially famous for his role as Frank Drebin in Police Squad and the Naked Gun films, which really defined his comedic talent.
Leslie Nielsen was a comedic genius, partly because he could deliver even the silliest lines with a completely straight face. Priscilla Presley, Elvis Presley’s ex-wife, plays his love interest in The Naked Gun. You might expect her to be cast simply because of her famous name, but she’s surprisingly funny and matches Nielsen’s comedic talent perfectly.
Airplane! Is One of the Bedrocks of Modern Comedy
Think about today’s popular TV comedies—shows like Family Guy often mix pop culture, silliness, and different comedic approaches. The movie Airplane! really set the standard for that kind of humor. Although many influential films seem dated now, Airplane! remains just as hilarious as it was when it first came out in 1980.
I absolutely love Airplane! It’s a hilarious movie about a pilot getting sick mid-flight, and it all comes down to Ted Striker, a veteran battling his own demons, to somehow land the plane. What’s so brilliant about it, even with all the silliness, is that the movie actually builds real suspense. They handle the serious parts really well, which makes the payoff of all the jokes and funny moments that much better and more satisfying. It’s a perfect balance!
Hannah and Her Sisters Finds the Beauty in the Mundane
This isn’t a typical movie with a clear storyline. Instead, it focuses on a large family and what happens to them over a year. While that might not sound exciting, Woody Allen elevates the simple idea with his signature blend of funny moments, sad scenes, and thoughtful observations about life.
The cast of Hannah and Her Sisters is truly exceptional. The film boasts a remarkable group of actors – including Woody Allen, Michael Caine, Mia Farrow, Carrie Fisher, Barbara Hershey, Max von Sydow, and Dianne Wiest – and gives each of them a chance to deliver a standout performance. It’s rare for a movie to have even one great acting performance, but Hannah and Her Sisters is filled with them.
Crimes and Misdemeanors Is a Timeless Parable
Woody Allen is considered one of the greatest comedy directors ever because he skillfully uses humor to explore serious topics. Throughout his career, he’s examined themes like morality, what it’s like to be an immigrant, and the often illogical nature of love. His film Crimes and Misdemeanors is still considered one of his most insightful works.
Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors tells the story of a man who arranges for his mistress to be killed to protect a secret. The film explores whether he can cope with the guilt and repercussions of his crime. Allen offers a darkly pessimistic take on the situation, similar to themes found in his other great works. Unlike some comedies that are simply provocative, Crimes and Misdemeanors delivers a meaningful message.
Back to the Future Is Firing on All Cylinders
Creating a truly funny movie, a captivating science fiction film, or a blockbuster that everyone can enjoy is incredibly difficult. This movie manages to do all three. What’s more, it understands that even comedies need a strong, engaging story to really connect with viewers – a quality often missing in today’s comedies.
Following the success of Back to the Future, director Robert Zemeckis created another huge hit with Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Both films were known for their compelling stories, humor, and groundbreaking special effects. While Zemeckis continued to achieve some critical acclaim throughout his career—including directing the Oscar-winning Forrest Gump, which often sparks debate—he never quite reached the same level of success he enjoyed in the 1980s.
Clue Is So Much Better Than It Has Any Right to Be
The movie Clue is surprisingly good, considering it’s based on a board game – a type of source material that rarely translates well to film. It easily could have been a forgettable attempt to make a quick profit. But thanks to a fantastic script by Jonathan Lynn, who also directed My Cousin Vinny, Clue succeeds as both a hilarious comedy and a gripping mystery.
The film also boasts a fantastic cast, with each actor delivering a hilarious performance. Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Brennan, Madeline Kahn, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren are all incredibly gifted comedic actors at their best. Interestingly, Christopher Lloyd appeared in both Back to the Future and Clue in the same year—while Back to the Future is more famous, Clue is arguably the funnier of the two.
