Student pleads guilty to smashing up cars after he admitted it all to ChatGPT

Okay, so this is wild. Apparently, a college student totally trashed a bunch of cars on campus while drunk. The craziest part? After it happened, he actually asked ChatGPT how much trouble he was in, literally typing ‘how fked am I?’ and then pleaded guilty in court. I mean, seriously? Asking an AI after causing that much damage? That’s a new one, even for me as a gamer who’s seen some weird stuff online.

The Smoking Gun reports that Ryan Schaefer, age 20, admitted to smashing things while intoxicated at 3 AM in 2025.

A Missouri State University student confessed to damaging cars by breaking windows, denting hoods, and ripping off side mirrors.

Immediately after committing the crime, Schaefer used ChatGPT on his iPhone to ask if there was any way investigators could trace it back to him.

Student caught asking AI “how f**ked am I?” after vandalizing cars

Springfield police discovered a concerning conversation the defendant had with the AI program on their phone.

The user’s conversation with the AI contained numerous typos, including questions like “qilll I go to jail.” They also appeared to be referencing past acts of vandalism, asking, “i got away w it last year. And I don’t think theres any way they could know my face.”

Look, I was going through some of the stuff ChatGPT was generating, and honestly, it was pretty shocking. I saw comments like, “it felt really good to mess them up” and even, “how screwed am I?” It was definitely disturbing stuff.

After his arrest, the judge prohibited Schaefer from entering establishments whose main business is selling alcohol and required him to undergo unannounced drug and alcohol tests.

He’s scheduled to be sentenced on July 27th and might receive a jail sentence of up to a year in Greene County, potentially as part of a special program.
