Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio recently shared a new trailer and details about their upcoming game, Stranger Than Heaven, during a special Xbox showcase. They highlighted new characters, combat features, and locations, and announced the game will be released this winter.

Stranger Than Heaven will take place in five different cities and time periods. These are:
- 1915 – Kokura
- 1929 – Kure
- 1943 – Osaka
- 1951 – Atami
- 1965 – Shinjuku
The story spans fifty years, following Makoto Daito and Yu Shinjo as they travel through various cities and time periods. Each location brings a new focus to their journey. Tragedy strikes early when Makoto’s father dies shortly after arriving in America, and his mother later succumbs to illness brought on by years of facing prejudice. Unable to easily communicate in English, Makoto desires to return to his mother’s homeland of Japan rather than remain in America. While attempting to sail to Japan, Makoto and Yu encounter a smuggler named Orpheus, portrayed by Snoop Dogg.

The story starts in Kokura, Fukuoka in 1915, a western Japanese industrial center that serves as the destination for Orpheus’ ship. It then moves to Kure, Hiroshima in 1929, a shipbuilding and industrial city that’s also a lively international social center, with hidden underground waterways and hilly landscapes. Finally, the narrative shifts to Minami, Osaka in 1943, a major entertainment district where Japan’s increasing influence from foreign cultures becomes clear, as the Yakuza and Mafia compete for control.
The story then moves to Atami, Shizuoka in 1951, a well-known vacation spot. It ends in Tokyo’s Kamurocho district of Shinjuku in 1965. The presentation hinted at a major secret being revealed there, but didn’t offer any further explanation.

The presentation also shared many of the actors who will be in Stranger Than Heaven. Here’s who has been cast so far:
- Yu Shirota
- Dean Fujioka
- Snoop Dogg
- Moeka Hoshi
- Tori Kelly (who is also singing the main theme song)
- Akio Otsuka
- Tokuma Nishioka
- Satoshi Fujihara
- Cordell Broadus
- Ado
- Bunta Sugawara (voiced by Takashi Ukaji)

After establishing the story and setting, Stranger Than Heaven’s demo highlighted its Show Biz and combat systems. Show Biz allows Makoto to record and learn sounds from the world – everything from animal calls to the noises of battle and even trains – and then use them to create original songs. The available sounds, and therefore the songs he can make, will change depending on where he is, the time of day, and the time period.

Makoto collaborates with composers he meets to create unique music within the game. As a Showman, he uses this to organize performances and coordinate promotions with other artists. While it first seemed similar to the hostess club management system, early gameplay footage suggests this feature is actually more complex.

In Stranger Than Heaven, you’ll control Makoto’s body sides independently – the right shoulder buttons manage his right side, and the left buttons control his left. The game features powerful charge attacks, and you’ll be able to upgrade the weapons you find throughout the game.

Stranger Than Heaven will be released this winter on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It’s available on Xbox through PC Game Pass and also works on Steam as a Play Anywhere title, meaning you can play it on both your PC and Xbox with one purchase.
