The world of Star Wars has always expanded beyond the movies, with many stories told in other formats. However, when Disney acquired the franchise, most of these extra stories were moved into a separate timeline called ‘Legends.’ Even now, in 2026, dedicated fans of the older stories still get occasional new content and surprises.
Sometimes, Disney officially recognizes older stories or reintroduces popular characters like Grand Admiral Thrawn into current storylines. However, most of the significant content once considered ‘Legends’ now comes from the dedicated Star Wars fan community, and that’s certainly true for a promising new game in development.
The Embers Dev Team recently released a new mod called Embers of the Empire for the 1999 space simulation game Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance, which still has a dedicated fanbase. Released on May 6th, the mod continues the story from Timothy Zahn’s popular Hand of Thrawn book series—some of the most well-known Star Wars novels ever written.
Embers of the Empire introduces Janz Gaaland, a new character who is drafted from the remote planet of Tarshoon and forced to join a struggling Imperial Regiment. This mod expands the game X-Wing Alliance with 14 new battles, updated ships and stations, and a unique in-game email system that helps tell the story. The Embers Dev Team spent years creating this mod and expresses gratitude to everyone who supported the project by providing feedback, testing missions, or simply showing interest during development.
It’s not surprising that games like Battlefront 2 still get big updates from modders, but Embers of the Empire really shows just how dedicated the Star Wars modding community is. It also proves that stories from the old “Legends” universe will continue to thrive as long as fans keep them alive – and given how passionate and dedicated Star Wars fans are, that could be for a very long time indeed.
Even after the closure of LucasArts, Star Wars fans still have several games to anticipate this year, including Zero Company and Galactic Racer. Further down the line, projects like Fate of the Old Republic are also in development. While game development has faced some setbacks and delays, there’s still a lot to look forward to for patient Star Wars gamers.
